Newspapers in the US

Legg inn av Sapphyre » 14. november 2007 kl. 20.37

Hi again folks, here's hoping someone can give me some more
information...

Is there a library (either one, or several) that I would be able to
visit to access several different newspapers? In Canada we have one
National Library and Archives that matains all that, but only Canadian
records. I'm wondering about the equivalent in the US. I may have to
dig through several papers to find what I'm looking for, so I'd rather
visit the library than try to order microfilm.

Please let us know who, what, when, where. It is possible that the newspaper is
on line.

Please explain exactly what it is you are looking for so that a more
definitive answer could be given and suggestions about where to look.
Yes, there are newspaper databases called NEWSBANK in the US, and many
university libraries and public libraries in the larger cities and
capital cities in the US subscribe to the databases and if you would
contact a library that has access to NEWSBANK they could probably do a
few searches for you for free. It would not be available to you
online to do your own searching.

I have free, at home, online access to part of the News Bank service. It is
a freebie that came with my home town library card. I suspect other
libraries may offer a similar service to their patrons.

There is no mandatory repository for newspapers in the USA. Local town/city
newspapers may have donated historical copies with their local libraries or
perhaps a nearby educational institution or even a local historical society.

Major Newspapers, like the New York Times, maintains an historical online
database (searchable) going back to 1851. They have the same for the Boston
Globe going back to 1871.

If you post what papers/geographical area you are interested in, somebody
might help you find sources.

You might check out this site for newspapers in the area you are searching.
Some of them have archives available for search, some at a price.
http://www.onlinenewspapers.com/

Local libraries in the town you are searching many times have researchers
willing to do a lookup for you.
http://www.publiclibraries.com/

And USGenWeb at http://usgenweb.com/ can give you some info for research in
towns you are searching.

I don't recall seeing a response...

There is no central newspaper repository in the US. The two largest collections
are probably at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, which is our national
library:

http://www.loc.gov/rr/news/

and, for pre-1821 issues, the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester,
Massachusetts:

http://www.americanantiquarian.org/newspapers.htm

Each state has a library designated as a repository for newspapers published in
that state, with most of the holdings generally on microfilm. For Massachusetts,
for example, that repository is the Boston Public Library:

http://www.bpl.org/research/microtext/news.htm

The state repositories are part of the United States Newspaper Program under the
auspices of the National Endowment for the Humanities, with technical assistance
provided by the Library of Congress:
