GEDCOM import fails for Reunion

I used FTM 2006 to export a GEDCOM file of about
1500 individuals on my Windows machine. I moved
the file to my Mac, and Reunion refuses to import
it, claiming is isn't a GEDCOM file. It sure looks
like one to me. How do I get Reunion to read it?

I got to the Windows machine. It looks like default settings
won't work for me. I did get a successful transfer now, but
not sure if I chose the "best" parameters.

Destination: FTM, FTW, TempleReady, or PAF.

I chose PAF this time. I think I left it FTM before.
Good choice? Bad choice? PAF is yet another program, not
Reunion.

Version: 5.5 or 4 (of GEDCOM). I chose 5.5.

Character Set: ANSI, ANSEL, IBMPC, or MACINTOSH. I chose
(this time) MACINTOSH. Why does this program require this
choice when I move other files transparently without
a problem?

Did I chose the "best" choices for the transfer?

Macintosh and version 5.5 are excellent choices, I don't know about the
Destination option, but if the PAF choice doesn't work try the
TempleReady as Reunion is set up to handle Temple type files.

I haven't checked yet but if the exported gedcom file doesn't work and
has the "ged" suffix try changing that to "txt"

I always use "Temple Ready"
for mo particular reason other than it felt right inthat GEDCOM wasan
LDS thing

The only time I've ever had a problem, it was because Reunion didn't
even recognise it because it couldn't tell it was TEXT. I *have* had
problems exporting from Reunion to FTM!

Have you tried opening it with GEDitCOM? That would report any problems
there were with the file, and once it had been through it and Saved
As... Reunion should handle it.

Macintosh encoding, GEDCOM 5.5 should work - but I've never had any
problems with encoding, Reunion can handle them all (it uses Unicode
internally, see the Help file).

Can you look at the .ged file in a text-editor? If so,
check the very first line of it. It SHOULD be a line that
is clearly English-language and begins with a 0 (zero). If
the first line _isn't_ as described, delete the first line,
saveas file1.ged and try to import.

PAF5 export tends to include an 8-chr$ line of
machine-language and it makes other programs gag becuase
they're not expecting machine-language there.
