HANS EDWARD JOHN SOLFIELD (1851-1937)

Hans Solfield was born in Helgeland, Norway on June 14, 1851. He married Helmine Sophie Stenerson, (1866-1935), in Norway, while there he made his living being a fisherman. Their three eldest children were born in Norway.

He came to the Lake Park, Minnesota area in 1893, but the family followed later. At first he worked on a farm, later rented and then bought one, which he sold in 1912.

In 1912, they came to Cooperstown, where he did odd jobs and cabinet making.

About 1918, he bought 160 acres along the Sheyenne River in Washburn Township (location, SW quarter of Section 14). The barn and house were connected together as one building. Early that spring the house and barn burned down. The rest of the family was still living in Cooperstown at the time of the fire. Some of the boys went to check how their father was making out and found him sleeping in a piano box. The pioneers were a hardy group.

A two-room house and a barn were then built.

The following children were born to Hans and Helmine Solfield:

Olaf, Catherine, Alfred, Herman and Barney - deceased

Axel, who lives in Minneapolis and has four children.

Elaine, who lives in Chicago.

Harry, who lives in Cooperstown. He married Lydia Hannu of Finlayson, Minnesota. They have two daughters:

Mrs. Edgar (Bernice) John and Mrs. Allan (Kathryn) Larson who attended schools in Griggs County.

Herman, (1903-1969), married Thelma Eide (19071960) and lived in Washburn Township on SW quarter of Section 14 and later bought Section 16 and lived there about 22 years. Their children were:

Janice - living in Cooperstown

Mrs. Leon (Carol) Roesler of Leonard, North Dakota

and Mrs. James (Dorothy) Lura - Cooperstown.

James and Dorothy Lura are now living on Section 16 of Washburn Township and have four children:

Denise of Fargo, Janel, Sandra, and Mark at home.

Do you find anything about Augusta Solfield, or Augusta Hansdatter..
Or Augusta Kristine Jæger Hansdatter? Or Augusta Christenson (same person, with different spellings)
She also emigrated to USA, but she didnt stay with the family, or emigrated at the same time, I think she came leither or something, but in 1900 she had send a letter to Norway. Augusta was born in 1878 in Norway, Hans Solfield was the father, Helmina was the stepmother.. Augustas real mother was Trine Kristine Karlsdatter...
Maybe she got married with a man with the last name of Christenson and had a daugther whose married name was perhaps Christine Pratt..

She is born in Norway, in Herø (Helgeland), the date is 18 oktober 1878 (from norwegian chirchbooks), she was confirmed in Herø in 1894 (8 juli). She lived in Solfjeld in Herø then. I dont know when she leave from Norway because i didnt find here with the rest of the family when they moved..But in 1900 we have a letter to Augusta, and the adress is in USA.. (she much have leaved beetween 1894-1900, and also had been in Norway afterwards because in a note it says she got back in 1912, but she was in USA in 1900 because of the letter..

In a book from USA it stands that she Maybe got married with a man with the last name of Christenson and had a daugther whose married name was perhaps Christine Pratt
(this is a booklet we have gotten from relatives in USA that we have contacted, It is the dauther of Hans and Helmine has written that..).. The ralatives in USA have also tried looking for Augusta but no luck.. Maybe she have any grandchildren in live feks..

On the letter it is written this adress:

Lake Park P.O (or T.O, not sure)

I had the letter home at my mam so I had to go there to sheck it up.. As you can she also is called Johnson.. Johnson is the name the family had after they came to USA, but because there was many people named Johnson, they changed to Solfield.. so she can bee in different names..

This letter is posted 1902 or 1903 I think, its difficult to see..I Think november 1902 from Norway and that it was in Lake park 10 mars 1903 (stempel)

But I guess she moved from Minnesota, cause in the booklet from USA it is written a note that she lived and worked in Fargo and Casselton, ND.. (This is after 1912, cause then she came to USA with her father- from the note in the booklet)

Lake Park is just to the south of me 20 minutes here at Flom, MN. Many of my relatives that came over from Trøndelag area first came to Lake Park, Minnesota as did many others. It was kind of a stop off point for people coming from Norway to this part of Minnesota.

Thank you, I have been looking at the emigration lists, I find the rest of the family but I cant find Augusta.. I dont know much about her..
Her father came to Lake Park in 1893 and in 1912 he and the family moved to Cooperstown. In Cooperstown I have a lot of relatives..
Hans made a visit to Norway in 1912, traveling troght Winnipeg, Canada. His dauther , Augusta, came back with him but didnt stay with the family (from the booklet)...
I find that trip in emigration lists, but only Hans, not Augusta.. (7 august 1912, Ship; Irma)

Here she is in the 1900 census. Working as a servant for the Smith's in Clay County of Minnesota. Clay County is just down the road from me here. She was born October 1878. The family is living in Moorhead, Minnesota, which is about an hour away from my home. The husband had a Saloon. She immigrated 1898 it says.

I would guess her father paid for her ticket as he was located at Lake Park in 1900.

I cannot find any more information about her.
There is a marriage database online from Clay County Minnesota, but it does not work on my computer. Maybe someone can check it for a marriage for Gusta.

Okei, thats sad, Wonder where she got married and where she died, she might have mooved to another country also. Meybe using another name then gusta johnson leiter too, I dont know- meybe solfield, hansdatter or the married name.

Margit, did you find Augusta leither on the emigration lists? Because I think she moved in 1912 too...(a trip to Norway meybe)
