seeking software recommendation

Legg inn av arty » 19. januar 2007 kl. 13.08

i do NOT require any search facilities - i already have all the info i
require. am looking for software to help me to create a tree only. but
a tree which will display ALL people at once - uncles, aunts, cousins
etc.. (ok, with scrolling of screen of course.) that is, not one which
only shows members of main, central family, and then by clicking on
particular individuals reveals more connections. preferably a free
download, but not necessarily - would also be willing to buy. many
thanks in advance. raphael altman.

Get Legacy:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/Index.asp?mid=4A17Nvi

With , TreeDraw for Legacy add-on from:
http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/TreeDra ... id=4A17Nvi

It will do it, and you can also modify that print,
and made A0 pdf:s which you can look/zoom in your computer.
With it you can do what ever you wish

Family Tree Maker has its All-in-One Tree, which does what you are asking
for. Here's what it says:

All-in-One Tree - Displays every individual that has been entered into the
Family File. You can click on the Options button to select if you want to
show unconnected step-family trees and/or unrelated trees.

It's not a free download though.

GenoPro offer you a different approach... the graphic interface.
You can view both ancestors and descendents at once... no generation
limits.
Take a look at it.

thnx to all who responded.

jack: downloaded the free legacy, and it was interesting, but found
that for what i wanted i really had to also get the family tree add-on,
as you pointed out, but wasn't prepared to spend the money, especially
without seeing it first.

kerry: i actually got this one, very cheap on ebay, on the strength of
it saying it could display all members at once. unfortunately, only the
'single line' (ascending or descending to/from an individual) trees
display in the clear, logical way i want, whereas the all-in-one-tree,
showing everybody at once, displays as an 'all over the place' graphic
depiction, without possibility of manipulating it - much of the
optional variation available is only available on the other types of
trees.

zyo: looked at the genopro - didn't really like the look of the
examples posted, and again, didn't want to spend the money just to
check it out.

i will make do with a combination of 'perfect graphic' linear trees,
and a higgledy piggledy all-in-one-tree that i now have from family
tree maker.

Have you looked at Genbox http://www.genbox.com/ - 30-day free trial. It
has "everyone" charts.

Part of the problem is that there isn't a neat way to do a 2D layout of an
all-in-one tree (or other complex family relationships). That is why most
packages only offer variations on ancestor or descendant trees, which are
more easily representable in 2D.

I guess you could export FTM's All-in-1 into Word from which you could
manipulate it further, but I suspect manipulating such a large diagram in
Word might be very difficult. What would be nice is if FTM supported export
of trees into something like Visio from which manipulating them as diagrams
would be easier.

While I am wishing, it would be entertaining to create animations of trees
(of any kind). A little bar across the bottom would show the passing of time
and the boxes and lines on the chart would appear as people were born, then
married and then maybe fade to grey as people died. Of course you'd need a
very large screen to display it.

I wonder how bad it would be in 3D.

Start with a home person. Create a descendant tree without spouses and
an ancestor tree for that person in the first plane.

For each person processed in descendant tree mode: attach their
spouse(s) offset into the third dimension. Create an ancestor tree for
such a spouse in the same plane as that spouse.

For each person processed in ancestor tree mode: attach their other
children offset in the third dimension. Create a descendant tree for
each such child in the same plane as that child.

View the whole thing with some sort of 3D rendering system, like OpenGL.

I hope I'm not too late to give pertinent information to the OP.

I use gramps. It runs on Windows or Linux.

You can produce a '.dot' file with gramps, which is input to a piece of
open-source software from Bell Labs, I believe, called 'dot'.

The dot programs can graph arbitrary networks, which is how you have to
look at large collections of related people. When you start graphing
several hundred possibly related people, you will be surpised at how much
cousin marriage goes on.

Anyway, using gramps, you can produce a dot graph, which is then processed
into a printable file. I use .PDF files, but you can also use .ps
(postscript) and .gif and .jpg and .png files.

If you like, you can edit the dot files (which are plain text), to
customize the graph significantly.

Gramps can read .ged files. So, the flow is .ged --> gramps --> .dot -->
dot --> .pdf --> printer

This is the only application that allowed me to graph 1200 of my ancestors
and cousins on a single graph, showing all lines of descent. The graph
was 10 x 8 feet. By the way, gramps allows you to filter which people are
to be graphed. So, I produce a graph by identifing the home person, then
graph everyone descended from the home person's fourth great grandparents.
Everyone that is in the ged file that satisfies that filter gets graphed.

thnx to all once more. i went for genopro, after zyo encouraged me to
go for the free trial. albeit with considerable fiddling, i was able
to produce what i wanted - a coherent, all in one tree of all the
people i wanted on it. i'm not really into big delving genealogy -
just wanted to produce a tree of all i do know, for my kids and
grandkids - about 100 names on it, and have done it. so the 14 day
free trial works for me too - i've got what i want, and that's it.
