Meaning of the popular finnish name "Siiri"
Hello all,
I would like to find out if anybody knows the meaning of the finnish
name "Siiri". A friend of mine is named Siiri and she always wondered
what that name probably means. All I could find out so far is that it
is a popular name in Finland.
Can anybody help me out on that or can somebody direct me to the
correct group.
Any hints are highly appreciated!
Thanks!! Greetings from Germany.

Siiri is probably the finnish form of Sigfrid like my name Juha is the
finnish form of Johannes.

Re: Meaning of the popular finnish name "Siiri"
Siiri is Finnish short form of Sigrid, and
Sigrid come from the Old Norse name Sigríðr, which was derived from the
elements sigr "victory" and fríðr "beautiful, fair".

Böljer, obviously a Swedish name, appears exactly three times in the
Finnish Population Register Centre database <www.vrk.fi>. Perhaps you
will find the years 1913, 1942 and 1964 familiar from your very table
of agnates. Also the form "Bölje" appears thrice in the database. Both
names could be dialectal forms of "Börje" (even "Birger" misheard by a
högsvensk clerk). On the other hand, the name could be of ancient
origin and only preserved in isolated godforsaken nut-bushes like
Hangö. Seriously, I've never heard the name before and can not think
of any parallel name with a wide distribution in Finland.

Sounds plausible enough. This is also what I had in mind when
referring to "ancient origin". While an amount of place names in the
Finnish coast, including Hangö region, are assumed to originate from
the viking era, the same could very well apply (to some extent) to
person names too. The name is also too obscure to have been adopted
from the proxima saga to obtain a hypothetical viking ancestry; a
tendency that I have witnessed in the past.
