Ancestry census page Update , Phil

Legg inn av Gjest » 28. juni 2006 kl. 4.13

Hello guys , I got it fixed ! , I figured out how to fix there screwup ! ,
A.com is sending the census pages as a ' jpg ' file , open them in yur
program , I use psp ,
Save it as a GIF File , which reduces the size , Make the change to print
size , change the dpi down to 150 from the 500 ++ they are using ,
Save As file name. jpg ,
The pictures are now deduced from 122 inches long to the less than 7 inches
, the file size has dropped from 5000 KB to about 450 kb ! , I will spend
this coming weekend reworking the 100 or more that have eaten half ( a good
piece ) of my storage space ! , Phil

There may be a way to save your weekend for better purposes. You should be
able to do all the conversion that you want in about fifteen minutes,
including downloading and installing Irfanview and a brief learning period.

Irfanview provides a Batch Resize option which will take all the image files
in a folder, resize them to a common size, and save them in whatever format
you are likely to want.

After one failed attempt, I have just resized 58 TIF files (mostly 3264*2448
pixels, generally 23,425 kB each, 1.14 GB in total) to 1024*768 JPGs,
totalling 4.04 MB. Time from clicking "Start" - less than 1 minute.

At my first attempt, I made a (fairly stupid) blunder - so don't follow my
track exactly :-)

I had selected File_Batch Conversion/Rename and selected "Set Advanced
Options". Then I ticked Resize and "Set long side to ..1024 pixels". What
I omitted was to also tick "Preserve aspect ratio". So I got 58 images,
1024*2448 :-(

Irfanview gives you a remarkable set of fancy options for that batch process
(which I had never even looked at until I started to write this post).

Cheers,

Hello Tim , Thanks for the note , BUT , that will NOT work , Each of these
100 or so Census pages ARE Different sizes , Depending on what those IDIOTS
In Utah did to them , I Have sizes running from 55 inches to 133 inches ALL
from the same census roll or book or year , I NEED to change them from jpg
to gif to make the changes , then save them as jpg in my BK program , I have
the Original Copies saved in
my " a Photo folder " , with the converted pix in ' My Pictures ' as the
gif file , While doing THIS Weekend work I will swap out the pixs in BK as I
finish each one

Whatever you do -- try to avoid the double conversion... You are
going from a format that retains color space at the loss of detail
(JPEG) to a format that retains detail at the loss of color space (GIF)
and then back.

GIF format can only have 256 defined colors in the image. If those
JPEGs have any smooth shading (and said shading is not pure grey-scale),
converting to GIF will result in the inclusion of either dithering
(wherein some smooth areas of the original are replaced by a matrix of
bright and dim dots to form a visual blend that looks similar from a
distance) or simple blocky rasterization (wherein you will see solid
blocks of single color with a sharp border to the next).

Then converting such back to JPEG will result in the JPEG algorithm
trying to make the dither/rasterization into a polynomial equation --
creating a fuzzy-edge on the rasterization, or bleeding the dither into
other solid areas.

Hello Tim , Thanks for the note , BUT , that will NOT work

Nothing in your explanation supports the view that Irfanview won't do the
job that you need.

It makes no difference to irfanview how many different sizes and shapes of
originals are involved. All you have to do is to define the longest
dimension of the final images you are wanting to create, specify that the
ratio between sides is to be maintained, and away you go.

My 58 TIF files included a number of different sizes and shapes (some of the
images had been cropped severely) - 3248*2160, 2880*92, 2542*624, 1892*668,
2384*500 etc. The resulting JPGs all have a longest side of 1024 pixels,
but the shorter sides vary according to the original shape.

If you want to retain the maximum detail, you could easily do two separate
runs - one to convert to suitably sized TIF files (which retain all
available detail) for archiving purposes, and a second run to convert
Ancestry's originals again directly to whatever sized JPGs you wish to use
in BK. Estimated time for the two runs - about 10 minutes maximum.

At least you might give it a try - you could be pleasantly surprised, and
you really could spend your weekend on more enjoyable pursuits. :-)

Phil,

Just another point - if you are determined to use Paintshop Pro and resize
the files individually, then you can still simplify your process greatly.
You should not need to convert to GIF to reduce the image size.

In PSP 7, for example, all that is needed is to open the file, then click on
Image_Resize. Select 'Pixel Size' at the top of the window, specify the
width of the image that you want, tick 'Resize all layers' and 'Maintain
aspect ratio'. Then click OK, and save the revised image somewhere safe.
(There are several different options for "Resize type" - I haven't a clue
which is best for your needs).
