The Family Edge -- DOS
Does anyone here still remember using a DOS program called Family Edge
(by Carl York)?
If so, did you ever use the macro feature? Does it work in the
shareware vers? If so would you share instructions?
Thanks.

Re: The Family Edge -- DOS - Fedge.rar (0/1)
Here is my Family Edge directory...Carl is no longer supporting the
program so I hope this is okay. I have deleted my data from it and
then compressed the files, I JUST ran it from my harddrive and it ran
fine, created all the files and History folder and everything.
I LOVED that program!!! I still ALOT of data in my History files and
AM NOT going to type them into TMG! I still have not decided what to
do with the data. TMG does NOT import the data correctly and when they
contacted Carl for me, years ago, he refused to cooperate.

Re: The Family Edge -- DOS
I forgot, I OWN the program and still have the disk too, although it
is on a 5 1/4" floppy. I do not have one of those anymore on any of my
22 machines here at the house.

He produced a Tiny Tafel editor, which no longer appears to work under Windows

I found it a very useful program, as Tiny Tafels are still one of the best
ways to find who is working on the same surnames in the same area at the same
period.
I'm not sure why it doesn't work under XP, and it will be a schlep to
reinstall Win98 just to be able to use one program.

But my other old DOS proggies seem to run.
Maybe find an old machine somewhere?
Perhaps my old BBS one, but the disk controller is dead, and I closed the BBS
because replacing a SCSI disk controller is probably too much of a schlep.

That could explain it, then.

it ran okay on my old 233MHz W95osr2 machine. I don't recall if this was
a generic problem, or one specific to applications written using
TurboPascal.
Unfortunately, if this is a true MS-DOS (text) program, it needs to
run within a command line shell. The WinXP cmd.exe shell /cannot/ be run
in compatibility mode. The 16-bit/W9x compatible shell is command.com --
but it doesn't have compatibility mode options either.
However... Try a command line shell rather than double clicking on
your program. That flash of black is probably a command shell opening,
and then closing when the program fails. Manually opening a command
shell (start/run => enter "cmd" for WinXP version, or "command.com" for
old version), navigating to the directory of your program (CD
c:\where\ever\you\put\it), and then typing the name of the program
should let you see what the error message is.

It seems to me I heard somewhere that Steve Hayes wrote in article
<[email protected]>:
Sorry to hear that; I've never had a similar problem with the
"Compatibility" thingy with WinXP Pro SP2--though I haven't need to use
it much.
That seems to be a common problem with the made-for-the-purpose
utilities for the Windows family.

Right, my nose led me to click on it. Brief flash of black as DOS Window opens
and closes.
I think the icon you right click on has to be an executable program. I
don't know quite what you've missed, but you should see a
"Compatibility" tab on the Properties dialog, with "[ ] Run this
program in compatibility mode for:" - when this is checked you'll see a
drop-down where you can choose from four versions of Windows.
Yes, I did that, set it to Win 98 (the last version I had which it worked
under), and, having done that, when I clicked on it got the brief flash of
black and a return to the directory with the program in it.

If anyone is in contact with Chris Long, perhaps they could try persuading him
to make his program open source, so that others could try updating them.

Says 233MHz Pentium-II had the problem; I seem to recall my W95

just on the fringe with the instructions used in the timing loop.
