MAC users, different topic (java runtime)

While y'all're discussing MACs in another thread, I wonder if I might steal a
bit of your expertise.

I have a cousin who's running OS-X and who, despite it all, is something of a
techno-luddite. I'm trying to determine how to get gdbi - a java-based front-
end for phpGedView - running on her machine. Since I'm running it on FreeBSD,
via a shell script and the command-line, I wonder if something similar is at
all possible on OS-X and, if so, how I can help her get it running on her
machine in such a way as she can connect with my database and phpGedView. I
have absolutely no experience with OS-X and would welcome any advice you might
care to offer.

Thanx,

Bob Melson

Sure. Have her do this:

1. Go into "system preferences" and turn on "remote logins" in the
"sharing" setup options.
2. Have her create a user account for you.
3. ssh into the box as normal from wherever you happen to be.

It's FreeBSD under the hood. The developer tools may or may not be
there. fink.sourceforge.net will be useful to you if she has decent
bandwidth, it's based on the FreeBSD package tool whose name escapes me
at the moment. Handles dependancies and all that, painlessly.

Direct email questions are fine too, Bob, or if you want me to test
things for you.

Thank you, Sir Dave. To tell the truth, I hadn't thought of the remote connect
from my box to hers - that may be the answer. She's got RoadRunner (TimeWarner
broadband), so bandwidth shouldn't be a huge problem.

Thanks for the offer; I'll hold off on that for the moment, tho' I will say
you're welcome to explore via gdbi if you're interested. It's very Brother's
Keeper-ish - on purpose - and is a handy, faster alternative to the full-blown
pGV presentation when doing some things. If you're interested ....

For the rest, guess that was my "Doh!" moment for the day.

Bob
