The good news is that people *do* seem to be heeding the message, and
using the site when we have spare capacity. The better news is that one
of the servers is due back with us tomorrow, having been back to the
makers for a new motherboard. It will take us a few days to reload the
website and database to it, but it should be back serving data within a
week. The other dead server is still with the makers, and should be
back soon afterwards.
But this is the position as at Sun 23 April 2006,........
Server Problems
Due to hardware problems, two of our seven servers are currently out of
action.
(Valid at 23 April 2006)
We are working to rectify the problem, and hope to have FreeBMD back at
full power in the near future.
Progress is a little slow.....................................

FreeBMD is a volunteer project, not a business. They do a grand job
with the resources they have available to them.
It's quite possible that as they are fixing one server, another is
going down. It does happen. It's also possible that the problem
isn't more complex than was first anticipated. That also does happen.
Just be grateful that the free resource is there, but don't forget
there are other alternatives available - they just aren't free.

"Way back in March", according to my calander was only a few weeks ago.
Have you volunteered to help or support them?
It's worked fine every time I've used it recently.

Good point Hugh, we should all make the effort to contribute, As I do
already,
and Charani I do know that it is not a business, I am not knocking
this, the fact it is a
free service, however my point was that they had upgraded of late, and
that the severs they
were using were not up to it.
And Lesley your few weeks is 7, a little more than a few.
Have a nice day and keep using the service........

Has it never occurred to you that, as a result of a TV programme there
are a lot more people now interested in genealogy and those people are
discovering FreeBMD, partly because it's being recommended by more
experienced folk. That in turn puts increased strain on the servers.

Re: FreeBdm, FreeCen etc
I don't have an issue with this but you seem to have a dislike of
those who wish to have an opinion.
It's a said reflection when persons like yourself feel that they know
it all.
You should heed the comment that you make, a lack of common sense dims
those little grey cells.
I trust that you find yours...............or maybe not!!!

I don't often read this group (too busy keeping FreeBMD running to read all
the groups that I might want to), so I haven't been able to reply sooner.
[Hint, if you're posting about FreeBMD, and want some input, post somewhere
that I might read it!]
As you might have noticed, we've made significant advances since then, and
the site is working well.
We are still operating with a reduced number of servers, mainly because we
are undertaking a programme of upgrade and repair a couple of servers at a
time.

On the contrary, the most recent servers added to the cluster are
functioning perfectly.
One of the failed servers is one of the originals from March 2002 (when
FreeBMD moved off the RW servers), and suffered a motherboard failure.
Shortly after it returned, it failed again with PSU problems. This server is
now back with the manufacturers for repair.
The second server that failed dates from 2004, it suffered a corrupted RAID
partition (like all our early servers it uses a software RAID) that server
is back in the land of the living.
The third failed server dates from early last year, and has suffered
premature drive failure on two disks. The disks in question are good quality
branded disks, and the premature failure of two in a single machine is a one
in a million event. New disks are on order.

Oh Dave that would so logical and practical that its no wonder nobody
thought of it
Its so much better to complain to the world at large than to get the answer
from the horses mouth.
That way the conversation goes on and on aimlessly and lots of people who
dont know anything about what they are saying get to say lots.
