CD Atlas
I'm tired of hefting my old (1966) Hammond World Atlas....and besides,
it is just about worn out.
I've decided to upgrade....can anyone tell me of their favorite CD
atlas? What do you like about it? What do you dislike? What do you
wish it would do but won't?
I'm looking especially for an atlas that I can enter a place name (such
as "Telocaset, Oregon" or "Zuos, Switzerland" and find it on a
map, including regional boundaries such as county, state, canton, etc.
An online subscription atlas might well do just as well if you're using
one and like it.
Thanks....

Save your money. Most are free on the web. I have Mapquest & Expedia bookmarked

and I can generally find anything I want between the two of them. There are a
number of other, sometimes more specialized, sites available also.

Re: CD Atlas
Thanks to those who suggested Mapquest, Expedia, Goggle, etc.----But,
unless I'm not using them correctly, those do not show county lines.
When I ask to locate Picture Rocks, PA, I need to see where it is within
the state, and that it is in Lycoming County, and that the county seat
is Williamsport.
Any other suggestions?

I just now plugged your example: "Picture Rocks, PA" into Expedia and it
immediately showed it with the heading "Picture Rocks, Lycoming, Pennsylvania,
United States". All the county borders are showing in dotted-yellow lines. Dunno
what else you want unless your eyesight is worse than mine. As far as county
seat, I thought you said "map" and you could find those on USGenweb:

Good suggestions by Bob, and USGebweb says the county seat is Williamsport.
First example given was Telocaset, OR, and Expedia says it is in Union
County, and USGenweb says the county seat is La Grande.
Second example was Zuos, Switzerland. Expedia shows it to be Zuoz,
Grabünden, Switzerland. Cantons are shown by yellow lines. Wikipedia at
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cantons_of_Switzerland shows all 26 cantons
with capitals, and Chur is the capital of Grabünden.
Sometimes takes more than one source to get the answer. I use these as Bob
suggests, and still have my atlases handy to find some of the nitty gritty
places, and be able to calculate distances between towns more accurately.

Bob...and Joe....
Yep-you're right. I took a quick glance at Expedia, missed the faint
(I'm partially color-deficient {pc for color blind}) yellow lines, and
didn't notice the printing at the top which gave the necessary info. I
see the lines fine now, now that I'm aware that they're there.
Thanks to both of you.......

Re: CD Atlas
To most genealogists, modern maps are useless.
In the UK most county boundaries have been changed several times in the past
hundred or so years. New towns have sprung up, and old villages have
disappeared.
Worldwide, many counties have new names - you might find Ceylon or Rhodesia
in your 1966 Hammond Atlas, but you won't find them on a modern site.
For research, my 1906 street map of London is far more use than today's A-Z
hang onto your Hammond!
