Is this the right group to ask questions about Family Tree Maker? I
apologize in advance if it isn't and would appreciate a hint as to where
I should ask my questions.
I have just been given FTM 9.0 and as a learning exercise I am working
on the trees in Homer's Iliad - as good a place as any to start.
I have found two cousins (the fathers are brothers) who are married and
have one son. The software insists on listing the two individuals twice
each. When I select "merge duplicate individuals" I am told that there
are no duplicate individuals.
Can anyone give me a hint how to solve this problem? Thanks in advance.

Re: family tree maker question
Tony--the problem may be that (in my experience) FTM doesn't automatically
recognize possible duplicates unless they have the same names AND THE SAME
BIRTHDATES (which your Homeric individuals probably lack).
For example, you enter John Smith once as James and Mary Smith's son, but
your also enter him as his cousin Bettie Jones's husband. Unless you also
enter John Smith's BIRTHDATE both times, you won't get the little pop-up
question that asks "Are these two John Smith's the same person?" When you
see that question, just answer "yes," and you'll then have the opportunity
to merge them in the database.
Go back and stick in a "made-up" birthdate for the two individuals with the
same name that you're trying to merge, and see what happens after you enter
thay date the second time.

Merge them individually. The automatic merge only works with identical
entries.

Re: family tree maker question
Tony,
This is not really a problem. It is a fact of life. If cousins marry,
they and their descendants will be shown (correctly) more than once
in trees.
Search the Family Tree Maker Help menu for Duplicate for more
information, including .................
---------------------------------------------------
Including duplicate descendants in Descendant trees and Descendant
Fan trees
If you have an instance of intermarriage in your family (for example
cousins marrying cousins), you have duplicate individuals in your
tree. A bracketed number, such as [1] appears next to each occurrence
of a duplicate individual's name. If there are several duplicate
individuals, the first one will be assigned [1], the second one will
be assigned [2] and so on.
To include duplicate descendants in a tree:
1. From the Contents menu, select Options (ALT, C, O).
2. Select the Include duplicate descendants each time they appear
check box.
3. Click OK when you've made your selection.
Family Tree Maker returns you to the tree view.
---------------------------------------------------
You may therefore switch off viewing the duplicates if you wish.
