In the message just above this one is a request from a lady to have a
file converted. The file extension is .aq
The file has been converted, and the lady has her data. SKS did it for
her, but I'm a bit puzzled how it was done, so come to this forum for
advice.
I believe the file was generated by Ancestral Quest (AQ), based on the
filename extension. IIRC, PAF derived from AQ, although PAF has fallen
behind while AQ has continued development.
I tried the original file as an import/open file with a number of the
usual apps, and renamed the file to x.paf to give that a fly.
Legacy didn't want to know (altho their blurb does indicate some use
with some versions of AQ files). FTM wasn't interested, nor were GenBox,
RootsMagic or TMG.
There seems to be no trial version of AQ to use for a one-off
conversion, so what have I discovered? Well, nothing really.
The floor is open.

Interesting file - .aq

Files with an '.aq' extension are data files prepared by "Ancestral
Quest". If you go the their web page, ancquest.com, a FREE demo is
available and it should open 'aq' files. Ancestral Quest does have
some features that PAF5 does not.

There IS a trial version though and I just dl'ed & installed it to be certain.
As to whether it would do that particular conversion, I can't say as I don't
have the file.

Yep, I did just that. The trial version won't export a GEDCOM, but it
will export to a .paf file, so I did that, loaded the resulting file
into PAF and created a GEDCOM. Round-about, but it shows it can be done.
Why would AQ defeat the GEDCOM export, but allow others? No idea.
Interesting to see where PAF came from, altho the divergence over time
can be noticed.

Since it's not among the options at all, I can imagine that their thinking might
be that of not reinventing the wheel. Gedcom was originally a separate utility
program for PAF and this continues that philosophy. It also helps to avoid
code-bloat and finger-pointing over whose program is wrong - 2 recent hot
topics.

Perhaps a misunderstanding. The demo version (11) has a GEDCOM export
option, but it is crippled in this case. The PAF option is enabled.
