Norway, Lofoten geography knowledge needed

Legg inn av Gnarlodious » 20. oktober 2005 kl. 19.18

My great-grandfather offers this information:

Ahnfelt Cornelius OLESON (Albert Sundsmo) was born ABT 1872 in Indersund,
Vigtin Island, Naro Bishoric, Norway.

Can anyone say exactly where this is? My great-uncle says they were in the
fish drying business, so I would guess it is this place:
&icon=x>

We know Albert's father and mother were born in Rørvik, and there is a
Rørvik close to Viktin

I assume the place names were all corrupted by census takers. Literally
spelled, none of these places show up in Multimap. Can anyone clear this up?

My best guess is Indersund, Vikna Island in Nærøy (Naeroy) Bishopric. That's
very close to Rørvik

Norwegian spelling has gone through a series of spelling reforms
since the 1800s. Generally, you will see names changing e.g from
using "g" to using "k".

Also ending "-en" has in many cases been replaced with "-a".

And we have had many redrawings of administrative boundaries.

This URL lists municipalities in Norway (past and present).

http://home.eunet.no/~jeri/kommuner.shtml

Check no 1750 on the list (17xx is Nord Trondelag). From 1800 until
1910 municipality no 1750 was known as Vikten muncipality, from 1911
it has been known as Vikna municipality.

You will also see that municipality no 1751 Nærøy (Naeroey) existed
from 1800 until 1875, when about 54% of old Nærøy was merged into
municipality 1750 (Vikten).

Thank you Stein and etos, that looks like the place!

Here is what I learned on the internet:

Nærøy is a municipality and town in the county of Nord-Trøndelag, Norway.
The Old Norse form of the name is Njarðey ('Njörd's-Isle'), found anglicized
as Njardey or less often as Njarthey.
Rørvik was also Røyrvik.
Vikna was an important coastal centre during the Viking Age judging from the
numerous burial mounds on its three principal islands: Indre Vikna, Mellom
Vikna, and the Ytre Vikna.

Rørvik is on the inside island, Indre Vikna:
<http://multimap.com/map/browse.cgi?lat=64.9254&lon=10.7798&scale=1000000>

That leaves the mystery word "Indersund" (indre sund). Could this be a local
name of a place? It appears nowhere on the internet. Or would it more likely
be "The inner sound" of Indre Vikna?

Thanks for all your help.

Innersund Gnr 21 in Vikna.

Innersund the farm lies on a halfisland on Middle-Vikna.
between Dragspøyta and Sundsvågen. The farm borders to
Stangring and Drag in Norh-east, and Settenøy in south.

These are all farms. The farmname most liley comes form
the fact the farm was in sound between Inner-Vikna and middle.Vikna.
This according to the Vikna bygdebook.

Thanks! My great-grandfather Sundsmo/Oleson was born on this island. Any
idea about Norwegian genealogy researchers who know about this family?

I have the bygdebooks, so why not give us
all the information you have about him, and
I'll check my database to see i9f I have him already
there.

When was he born, his parents name, did he marry here or there,
and if here her name, anything you know about his parents and so on.

Thank you very much!
Although their name was Oleson, there was another name "Sundsmo" attached to
them. I am especially interested where this name came from. Possibly there
is a local place of that name, or they added a suffix to make a name from
"Sund". Any ideas would be welcome.
When they came to Wisconsin, they discovered way too many Oleson names in
their neighborhood, so Sundsmo became their used name.

Family legend has it that they were in the fish drying business, so it was
probably on the water somewhere.
