I'm looking for information on my Grandfather Hans Jacob Hegna. I've uploaded a document on him that also includes info on my grandmother Marith Eline Hagen whom he married. My mother is Eunice Mary Hegna. The second document would be on Hans Jacob Hegna's father;
Halvor Andersen HEGNA (1823-1896)-my Great Grandfather, if this would help out finding information or documents. I have more family tree pages which my mother and her sister Gladys Carol Hegna worked on before they passed away. I hope I haven't uploaded too much information at one time, but I thought it would help out in some way. Looking forward to hearing from someone...

Could you help me with the last names please? I'm confused with Siljen, Kone, Hegna Nordal. Are these the farms where they were born at or the last names? The below is what I have on my family tree, see document below.

Siljen , Hegna and Nordal will be farm- names where these people lived.
Unfortunately I am not so familiar with farm-names in Telemark , so the best to help you will be local people in Telemark , as I live in Trøndelag, in the middle of Norway.

I'm confused with Siljen, Kone, Hegna Nordal.

Siljan is a parish name, Hegna and Nordal are farm names. Kone = wife.

Now for the name game. Did people take on those names for their last names? Some of my records that my Mom and Aunt made up were confusing because of this.

It was very common that people used the farm names. And its very confusing sometimes

Hi.

Prior to ca. 1900-1910 (in Norway) contained a person's name: First name, father's name(patronymic) and the name of the farm/croft.
As Halvor Neilsen Siljan
and his son Anders Halvorsen Hegna
The fact that son has changed farm name means that he has moved to an other farm.
Farm name was changed when a person moved to a new farm/croft.

It is an advantage with patronymic for us looking for ancestor.
Is the patronymic of a man/woman Andersen/Andersdatter, is the fathers first name Anders.

Thank you for that information. Wondering now if one can have a number of different last names depending on how many farms they lived on. Or, is it just the farm that they would have been born at?

As long as they live on the farm they keeps the farm name as a surname.
You may see it as a mail address.

I have ancestors who have five different "farm name"

But remember, no rule without exception.

I see that your great grandfather, Halvor Andersen Hegna, was a brother of my great-great grandmother, Inger Johanne Andersdatter Hegna (1821-1858).

Siljan/Sillien (and various other spellings) is the name of a community which was formerly known as Slemdal. It is also the name of a farm in Eidanger, which is where your (and my) Halvor Nielsen Siljan was born, raised his family, and died.
