Bernhardt Johanesson b. 1858 Svarstad, Lardal, Vestfold
Looking for anyone researching Bernhardt Johanesson born on the Sondre Hvaal farm. I have parish records of his birth, and the census information on the farm in 1865 and 1875. He m. Elise Kristine Friberg in Duluth, MN in 1884. Would like to find when he emmigrated sometime between 1875 and 1884 when he married. Thanks for any help.

Hello Darlene..
I found Bernhard Johansen left Norway for Minnesota, but he was alone , maybe this is wrong person, but I`ll try anyway.

Rune, thanks for your reply. The Bygdebook is incorrect - that is the date he, wife, and 2 children are returning from Norway back to America after a visit. The passenger/emigration list shows him as an American citizen. I have his marriage record in Duluth in 1884, so I know he came to America before that. The 1900 census shows he came in 1881 and Elise Friberg in 1882. I also have him in the 1885 and 1895 Wisconsin state census. So the date in the bygdebok is strictly a return trip to America.

Thank you Anne-Lise, The information you found on a Bernhard Johanesson leaving Norway in 1888 is interesting. As stated above, he, his wife and 2 children had been in Norway (apparently for a visit) and they returned to the U.S. in 1888. The birth date is also correct for Bernhard, but don't understand why he is shown alone. I've copied the record and will work on this puzzle some more. Thanks again.

I believe you could have found the right one. He was in Norway in the 1875 census and in Minnesota in the 1885 census, so this could very well be him. I know his wife, Elise Kristine Friberg, traveled to America in 1882 and they were married in 1884 in Duluth, Minn. First I knew he might have gone to Chicago, but this quite likely could have been him. Will have to do more research on this one. Thank you very much for your help.
