Baptism in 1829

Legg inn av gj05502 » 16 des 2008 17:15:52

Baptism record #68 on this page has material that I'm not sure of:
Kildeinformasjon: Oppland fylke, Nord-Aurdal, Ministerialbok nr. 3 (1828-1841), Fødte og døpte 1829, side 17.
Permanent sidelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:kb_read?i ... x_side=-21
Permanent bildelenke: http://www.arkivverket.no/URN:NBN:no-a1 ... 940132.jpg
This is a new parish for me and I am doing work for a family "outlaw" (relative).
What is the word before the date?
What is the L No. 98 refer to?
The column next to the name usually refers to Uogte or Ogte? What does this word say?
Is the residence Svankelden? And is there any information on this farm or family:
Halvor Knudsen Svankelden and Eli Gulbrandsdatter. Other information I have has Halvor Knudsen Riste And Eli Gudbransdatter Fodnes. The Fodness name is what was used in American and then Canada.
Other information I have also has Knut Halvorsen Riste but he was born at Svankelden??
Thanks so much for any assistance or direction anyone can offer.
Sincerely,
David Vinge

David:

To your questions about the record:

The boy is born "Den 16de Juli" which means "on the 16. of July", and baptized "Den 16de August" (on the 16. of August) in U. K., which probably means Ulnes kirke (church). There are several churches in the parish of Nord-Aurdal, f. i. Aurdal (earlier written Ourdal, abbreviated O.), Ulnes (abb. U.), Reinli (abb. R.) etc.

The column gives information about Uægte (illegitimate) or Ægte (legitimate). This child was legitimate born.

The parents were Halvor Knudsen Svanhelden and wife Eli Gulbrandsdatter. Svanhelden was the name of the farm on which they lived at the time when the child was born.

Else,
Thank you for that info. I have a hard time getting Den from that priest's writing. Also the word Uægte (figured that out!) is what I thought but it doesn't look like it to me!
The only question I have left is what does the L. 98 mean after Knud's name? I've never seen this in other parishes' records.
Thanks again,
David

It has probably something to do with military registration! As you see, these remarks only appears at the boys' names. The priest had (in earlier days) to do with military registrations as well as the civil ones, and the most convenient way to fullfill this task, was to do the registration at the child's baptism.

L No. 98 would be "Legd No. 98" = legd; a minor military district.

I think!

Else B.

Interesting! I've never heard or read about that before. Thank you for another lesson learned.
