Finding farms on a map
We are trying to find some ancestral farms for a visit by a lag member in August. Unfortunately, we have not been able to find them on any on-line map, nor in the 1943 edition of Norsk Gardsbruk. I suspect that several no longer exist.
The first is Vinterbrækken (Brækken), with the the last known owner as listed in Jacob Bull’s book as Jakob Johansen, f. 1907, who took over this farm in 1933. It was a small farm, between Hellstad and Midtskogen.
Second is the nedre Bakken, Velstu Undset farm. According to Bull (pages 289-290), the last known owner of part was Torleif Tollevsen, f. 1889, who took over the farm in 1933. He and his wife Karete Juliusdtr had two children, Thor Birting, f. 1921 and Jacob Haarset, f. 1923. If I am reading Bull correctly, the last known owner of the other part was Esten Mortensen, f. 1881. He and his wife Sigrid Pedersdtr had 10 children together.
Third is Bjøntegaard Søndre (Bjønngarden). Bull (page 30) has the last known owners as Jon Jonsen and Kari Eriksdtr, and then had 10 children together.
Takk så mye, De kan skrive på norsk.

Hi
Information about Bakken and Veslestua at Unset are found in Norske Gardsbruk, Hedmark vol 2 at page 1653.
I have sent you information about these farms via e-mail (hope you still have the same e-mail address).

Takk, Vivi ~
Yes, the Bakken farm on page 1653 matches what Jacob Bull has in his book -- this is wonderful! Are you saying that Veslestua at Undset is the same farm? I could not find it referenced on this page or the pages where the various Unset farms are described (1674, 1675).
I did not get your email; mine is john dot reindl at att dot net.
Thanks again so much!
John

Hei Matthias ~
Thanks so, so much for finding these three farms! It is a great gift to our lag member who will be visiting next month!
I will have to update my on-line map searching system....
Best wishes,
John

Re: Finding farms on a map
Just a little travel tip.
Not that I am well known to the Rendalen area, but I noticed from the map that one of Norway's best known canyons, Jutulhogget, is located just a mile northwest of Brekka.
It is nothing like the Grand Canyon, but still one of the longest canyons in Northern Europe, and surely worth a visit if your acquaintance is traveling in the area.
All the best,
Matthias

Hi
The library in Rendalen might help you get in touch with the right persons:

...and Jakob Johansen was the uncel to my father, known as Jakob Undseth, which also i remember clearly, he lived until 1973, he was the owner of the Brekka farm you refer to. Feel free to contact me for more info and sharing information.
