Eric Johnsen Høgelie 18/5/1852-?

The document "Sjømannsruller for Stavanger" forwarded to me (thanks to Gaute Klepp) shows Eric Høgelie's military record. I'm still stuck on whether his "sign out" was voluntary or if he had died. Is it possible to find out more about his military service? If he volunteered to fight in the Boer war, where might I ask for information about that?

Eric's son, John Høgelie Johnson (my grandfather) emigrated to America aboard the Majestic arriving in NYC in 1899 (he says on his naturalization papers). I haven't been able to verify that yet. An odd coincidence is that during that time the Majestic was used to transport troops to Cape Colony. . . Did my grandfather fib about his arrival in America?

I hope this isn't too much to ask in one topic question. Thank you in advance for your help.
