Strandsitter used in historical documents about people and households who do not own or have registered their own land. The term is known from the 1600s to the mid 1900s . The term refers to people who have houses on a plot of land they do not own, land that belongs to a farm, often near the sea, in the fjords. Strand=shoreline. A strandsitter can pay an annual ground rent for his land, or he may have a verbal agreement for permission to use the site.

A Kipper or kiper is a man who make barrels of wood, often used to salt herring or other kind or fish/meat into. A man who had this occupation for living was also called bødtker.

Saugmester is a timbermill(sawmill) master craftsman.
