Kitil Torjusson Finnesgarden f.1816, Gol.
Han reiste til Am. i 1852. Giftet seg 1852 med Guri Knutsdtr. Jegleim f. 1835, Gol.

Takknemlig for hjelp

M.v.h. Karen Elise Haugstad.

# Note:

Carl J. Finnesgard (or Finnesgaard), born December 19, 1880, was the oldest son of the Norwegian farmers Torger (or Torjus) K. Finnesgaard and Mathilda Swenson of Kenyon Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. The 1900 US Census of Kenyon Township taken on June 22, 1900 lists the 19 year-old Carl J. Finnesgard as a college student living with a "partner" Paul C. Hulebak. In a directory of Rice County, Minnesota in 1903, Carl J. Finnesgaard can be found listed as a student enrolled at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

By the 1910's Carl, along with his brothers Edwin and Gustav migrated up to Divide County in far northwestern North Dakota to homestead. On May 7, 1910 when the Federal census was taken, Carl appears by himself farming in farming in Township 161 N, Range 99 W (later called Burg Township), Divide County, North Dakota. Bureau of Land Management records list Carl J. Finnesgard being granted a 160 acre homestead in Section 32 of that township on September 28, 1911 at the same time that his brother Edwin Finnesgard is being granted a 160 homestead in Section 22. It is most likely that Carl's domicile would have been a sod house during this early period. A 1915 map of Burg Township shows "C. J. Finnesgard" farming 240 acres of the northwest portion of Section 22, while his brother Edwin is farming 240 acres of the southwest portion of Section 22. Carl and Edwin are shown jointly owning another 160 acres in the northwest quarter of Section 32. Their brother "Gust Finnesgard" is shown farming the south 320 acres of Section 1 Burg Township at the same time.

In his registration for World War I draft in 1917-1918, Carl J. Finnesgard lists himself as single and farming for himself in Plumer Township, which is located directly east of Burg Township in Divide County. By January of 1920, when the US Census was taken, Carl is now listed married a Norwegian-born woman by the name of Helga. She is 20 years younger than him and they are shown listed with a newborn baby girl named Donald? (difficult to read).

The North Dakota vital statistics list Carl Finnesgard's death as taking place on June 25, 1922 in Ward County. The following brief obituary in the June 30, 1922 edition of the Divide County Journal [Crosby, North Dakota] provides more detail concerning the circumstances of his death and burial:

"CARL FINNESGARD PASSES AWAY SUNDAY

"The people of Crosby were shocked the fore part of the week to learn that Carl Finnisgard, one of the prominent young farmers of Burg township, had died in one of the hospitals in Minot on Sunday following a brief illness from pneumonia.

"Carl had been ill for some time with rheumatism and decided to go to Minot for treatment. He was getting along fine for a time but it suddenly turned into pneumonia and death followed shortly after.

"The deceased was an old time resident of this community and had many friends who regret very much his untimely death. He is survived by his wife and one small child.

"The remains were shipped to this city and were laid to rest in the Trinity Lutheran cemetery southwest of Crosby, Rev. Stove of Ambrose [ND] preaching the ceremony."

# ID: I07440
# Name: Gustav A. Finnesgard 1
# Sex: M
# Birth: APR 1886 in Minnesota, probably Goodhue County
# Residence: 1915 Farming 320 acres on the south half of Section 1 of the Burg Township (Township 161 N, Range 99 W) of Divide County, North Dakota per a 1915 map of the township
# Event: 1900 Census 01 JUN 1900 Kenyon Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota
# Event: 1910 Census 10 APR 1910 Driver for an oil wagon in the town of Aneta, Nelson County, North Dakota
# Death: AFT 24 AUG 1917 in unknown
# Note:

Gustav A. Finnesgard (or Finnesgaard), was born in April 1886 per the 1900 census, and was one of the children of the Norwegian farmer Torger (or Torjus) K. Finnesgaard and Mathilda Swenson of Kenyon Township, Goodhue County, Minnesota. The 1900 US Census of Kenyon Township lists Gustav going to school and living with his parents and six siblings on the family farm.

By the 1910's Gustav, along with his older brothers Carl and Edwin migrated to Divide County in far northwestern North Dakota to homestead. It appears that Gustav did not immediately move to Divide County with his brothers, since the 1910 Federal census shows him working as the driver of an oil truck in the town of Aneta, Nelson County in east central North Dakota. Shortly thereafter he must have moved to Burg township in Divide County where his brothers Carl and Edwin had established homesteads in 1911. Also farming in Burg Township at the time was Martin and Oline "Lena" Johnson and their large family. Their oldest daughter Bertha (anglicized form of the Norwegian "Berith") Johnson is recorded to have married Gustav Finnesgard in 1914. Gust Finnesgaard took over farming the homestead of Bertha's father Martin Johnson when he and Oline and their eight youngest children returned to live east of Osakis, Minnesota in 1914. A 1915 map of Burg Township shows "Gust Finnesgard" farming the south 320 acres of Section 1 Burg Township. The 1915 map also shows his brother "C. J. Finnesgard" farming 240 acres of the northwest portion of Section 22, while his brother Edwin is farming 240 acres of the southwest portion of Section 22. Carl and Edwin are shown jointly owning another 160 acres in the northwestern quarter of Section 32.

Family records indicate that Gustav and Bertha began having children in rapid succession, with Clarence Alvin Finnesgard (later changed to Alvin Clarence) born on July 16, 1915 and daughter Orlyn Beatrice Elenore born March 13, 1917, both in Divide County. A third child Mildred was born in about April 2, 1918 in the vicinity of her maternal grandparents Martin and Lena Johnson near Osakis, Minnesota.

Mention of Gust Finnesgard and his family is occasionally made in the news of the local newspaper, the Ambrose Tribune. For example, in 1917, the following entries in the Ambrose Tribune refer to Gust:

March 9, 1917 (Goosneck Township news) --- "Hattie Uprud, who is employed at the Gust Finnegaard home, visited with Mrs. Fred Dahl Friday afternoon and also took in the dance at Tansem in the evening."

April 13, 1917 (Ambrose news) --- "Gus Finnesgard was among the good farmers of Berg [sic - Burg] township who were transacting business in the city the first of the week. The Tribune was pleased to receive a subscription renewal from Mr. Finnesgard."

June 15, 1917 (South Country news) --- "L.O. Anderson, Gust Finnesgard, Mike Tiegen and Louis Paulson took a trip by auto Thursday to Minot [ND] and returned Friday."

June 15, 1917 (South Country news) --- "Gust Finnesgard made a trip Tuesday to Crosby [ND]."

July 13, 1917 (South Country news) --- "Mr. and Mrs. Gust Finnesgard made a visit by auto to Mohall [ND] last week. They report the crops being very poor that way."

August 24, 1917 (South Country news) --- "Gust Finnesgard made a trip to town [Ambrose] Monday."

The August 24, 1917 is the last edition of the Ambrose Tribune that was found to make mention of Gust Finnesgard's activities (the editions spanning from October 1917 to December 1917 were missing from the North Dakota State Historical Archives). By early 1918, Gust appears to have vanished. Official and family records are somewhat vague concerning Gustav Finnesgard's exit from the scene. Although required by law, Gust Finnesgard is not listed registering in Divide County in 1917 - 1918 for the World War I draft as did both his brothers Carl and Edwin. Neither the North Dakota or Minnesota state death indices list him dying within those respective states. His nephew Orvin Finnesgard (son of Gust's brother Edwin), who lived his life in Divide County, North Dakota, states that he never knew what became of his uncle Gust. No other records (1920 and 1930 census or death records) have been found from other states mentioning the name of Gustav Finnesgard. Sometime in early 1918 his wife Bertha returned to her native Minnesota and by 1920 all three of their children had been given up to be raised by others while Bertha had gone off to live in Tacoma, Washington. So what transpired to split up the family, and what became of Gust Finnesgard?

Information from some family members state that Gustav Finnesgard left his wife and young children when their last daughter Mildred was about six weeks old. Others say that he disappeared in North Dakota prior to the birth of his last child Mildred in Minnesota. Mildred was given up by her mother to be raised by the childless couple Theodore and Ida Bjerkan of Osakis, Minnesota, so it is likely that Gust disappeared some time before April of 1918. Relatives state that Gust had a drinking problem and a bit of a temper, and one day he went to work, but never returned. At the time he was a delivery man and drove a company cart with horses (probably a dray business). It appears that while still living in Divide County, North Dakota, Gust had bought additional land in Section 12 of Burg Township and may have overextended himself and was unable to make the payments on the mortgages he took out on the land. His financial problems could have been either the cause or effect of his drinking and probably played a big role in his disappearance. Beginning in January 1918 and ending in early March 1918, notices were printed in the weekly editions of both local newspapers, the Ambrose Tribune and the Divide County Journal [Crosby, North Dakota], indicating that Gust and Bertha Finnesgard had gone delinquent on mortgages taken out at the Citizens National Bank of Crosby on January 3, 1917 for land bought in Section 12 of Burg Township, and at the Citizens National Bank of Ambrose on March 24, 1917 for a mortgage taken out against his original land on the SE quarter of Section 1 of Burg Township. Initially the newspaper notices were a summons for "Gust Finnesgaard, sometimes known as Gustav Finnesgaard or G. A. Finnesgaard" to answer the complaints of the banks, regarding late payments. These newspaper notices escalated to describing the foreclosure on his delinquent mortgages. Two different notices against Gust Finnesgard appeared in the Friday, February 28, 1918 edition of the Ambrose Tribune. The following was one of those published notices:

"Dated on this 7th day of February, 1918. Citizens Bank of Ambrose, N. D. Assignee of Mortgagee, Brace & Stuart, Attorneys for Assignee of Mortagee, Crosby, North Dakota."

It is possible that Gust Finnesgard left his family and the area to avoid the humiliation of seeing his land taken away in North Dakota, or became despondent and sought to escape his financial and emotional troubles. He appears to have vanished. Although it is possible that Gust Finnesgard took his own life or was a victim of foul play, no death was recorded in either the local newspapers nor in the official records. In 2005 Gary Molander of Divide County recalled hearing his father speak of Gust Finnesgard's disappearance. His father George Molander had grown up on a farm in Burg Township and was fifteen years of age at the time Gust disappeared. He believed he saw Gust get on a train at the local station around the time of his disappearance. Whether it was really Gust Finnesgard at the train station is far from certain. If it was, one can only speculate what became of him. Did he escape across the border to Canada? Did he become homeless and die unknown? Did he take another name and live elsewhere? The family would welcome any information that would help resolve this mystery [ - David E. Farnsworth].

# Note:

The following obituary of Beatrice Orlyn (Finnesgard] Voxland was found on page 14 of the Wednesday, August 21, 2002 edition of the Kenyon Leader [Kenyon, Goodhue County, Minnesota]:

"Orlyn Voxland

"Orlyn Voxland, age 85 of Kenyon, died Wednesday, July 30, 2002 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester [MN].

"Beatrice Orlyn Elinor Voxland was born March 13, 1917 and spent most of her life in the Kenyon and Faribault area. On August 15, 1940 she married Marvin Voxland at the Holden Church parsonage. They lived in Faribault [MN] for 23 years and in Scottsdale, Arizona for 14 years before returning to Kenyon in 1986. Marvin died January 24, 1988.

"Orlyn worked as a nurse at District One Hospital. She belonged to the hospital auxiliary and the Eastern Star. She was a member of Gol Lutheran Church and the Ladies Aid. Since 2001 she was a resident of the Zumbrota Nursing Home.

"She is survived by one son, Dick (Dottie) Voxland of Sacramento, California; one daughter, Kay (Mike) Parmalee of Santa Rosa Beach, Florida; one grandson, Chris (Tracy) Becraft and two great-granddaughters, Kendall Ann and Sydney Laine, all of Scottsdale, Arizona.

"She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two brothers Edwin and Rudolph.

"Memorial services will be Thursday, August 22, 2 p.m. at Gol Lutheran Church in Kenyon with Rev. Keith Homstad officiating.

"Burial will be at Gol Church Cemetery.

"Friends may call at the church one hour prior to services on Thursday."

In 1918 when Orlyn's father Gustav Finnesgard had disappeared and her mother Bertha (Johnson) Finnesgard gave up her three children to be raised by others, it was arranged for Orlyn to be raised by the older childless couple Martin and Caroline (Swenson) Dokken in Kenyon Township, Goodhue County, in southeastern Minnesota, where Orlyn's father had been raised. Caroline was a younger sister to Gustav Finnesgard's mother Mathilda (Swenson) Finnesgard. Thus, Orlyn grew up surrounded by her relatives of her birth father. It is not known whether or not Orlyn was ever formally adopted by the Martin and Caroline Dokken, but by the time of the 1930 US Census, the 13 year-old Orlyn had assumed their surname. Orlyn had two older adopted/foster brothers named Edwin, who died in 1924, and Rudolph, who passed away in 1985. According to her daughter Kay Parmelee, Beatrice was afflicted by Polio during her younger years. This disease would result in atrophication of her muscles later in life.

Orlyn was never in contact with her birth mother Bertha (Johnson) Finnesgard Bedford, and she never spoke of her birth parents or her natural brother Alvin and sister Mildred to her children. This loss of contact is evident in her mother Bertha Bedford's obituary in February 1974 in Tacoma, Washington which stated "Besides her husband, survivors include a son, Alvin Finnesgard in Washington State; two daughters whose whereabouts is [sic - are] unknown;"

A picture and writeup of Edwin and Hannah Finnesgard's family was found in a 1974 History of Divide County, North Dakota:

"HANNAH AND EDWIN FINNESGARD

"In 1955, Mr. and Mrs. Finnesgard moved to Williston and in 1962 they celebrated their golden anniversary. Mr. Finnesgard passed away in April, 1966. Mrs. Finnesgard entered Bethel Home as a resident in June 1971.

"They had seven children: Alf, who passed away in 1933; Myrtle, at Jamestown, N. D.; Esther (Mrs. Luther Halvorson) lives in Lincoln, Neb.; Her husband passed away in 1968. She has five children: Susan, Deborah, Janet, Stephen and Timothy. Stella (Mrs. Bertil Hult) is a pastor's wife, lives in Quincy, Mass. They have six children: Rebecca (Mrs. Chris Worley) in England; Nathan (married to Christine Smith of Montevideo, Minn.) just out of the service (army band); Lillian (Mrs. Morris Stromme) lives on a farm south of Zahl and has three children, LeRoy, Mavis, and Paul; Thelma (Mrs. Trygve Dahl II) lives in Westminster, Calif. and has four children, Trygve III, Sharon (Mrs. Ronald Walker), Helen and Daniel. Orvin, with his wife, Jeanette, and children, Mark, Lincoln, Joel and Rhoda, live on the home place in Burg township and is a farmer."

A more detailed article on Edwin Finnesgard and his family farm was written by Cecile Wehrman for the Wednesday, July 26, 2006 edition of "The Journal" [Crosby, Divide County, North Dakota]. That article contained a picture of Edwin Finnesgard and his wife Hannah Hendrickson on their wedding day, as well as a current picture of four of their seven children (Esther Halverson, Stella Hult, Orvin Finnesgard, and Lillian Stromme). The article in its entirety read as follows:

"Finnesgards farm for 100 years

"About 60 descendants of Divide County pioneers Edwin and Hannah Finnesgard came last weekend from 10 different states to the Orvin and Jeanette Finnesgard farm in Burg Township to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the farm. The family reunion was planned to coincide with the Divide County threshing show. 'Its our heritage,' said Jeanette. Besides, Orvin and Jeanette are fixtures at the Bee --- Jeanette works in the kitchen and Orvin has been on the Historical Society Board for decades. The couple has always valued their family's pioneer heritage. 'It's sort of a tribute to the past and people. They had to brave everything to come up here and settle,' said Orvin.

"Putting down roots

"Edwin was born in 1882 in Kenyon, Minn. Like many young men from large farm families, he saw a chance to homestead in North Dakota as a great opportunity. 'The big thing was free land,' Orvin said. 'I think quite a few just liked adventure, but maybe the big thing was, the opportunity to start in their home area just wasn't there.' The 24 year-old got the lumber for his homestead shack in Ray, 45 miles away. It cost $55 for the lumber and another $20 to have it hauled to his land and built. The shack was then covered with sod. In the spring of 1907, Divide County's 1964 history records, Edwin shipped five horses, two cows, a grain drill, plow, wagon and other belongings to Ambrose. 'They were allowed one car to ship their belongings and they rode with it,' Orvin explained. 'Can you imagine those people coming out here?' Jeanette pipes in, shaking her head at the thought. 'They really didn't have any landmarks, no roads, just trails,' Orvin added. The farm, located 17 miles southwest of Ambrose, today has an Alamo address, but that hasn't always been so. 'Over the years I think my dad had four or five different post offices that sprang up. At different times, the farm got mail from Ella, Plummer, and Rudser, none of which survives. Edwin broke up 65 acres the first spring and summer, seeding 15 acres to oats. In 1910, he bought his first tractor --- a Rumley Oil Pull, just like several in the threshing show parade, Orvin said.

"Making a family

"On Thanksgiving Day, 1912, Edwin married his bride, Hannah Henrickson, another Minnesota native. 'She had two brothers who had homesteaded here and she came out to keep house for them,' Jeanette said. Their first child, Thoralf was born in 1914. He died in a farming accident at the age of 19. Myrtle, now deceased was the second child. Then came Esther, Stella, Lillian and Orvin, all of whom were able to attend the reunion. Esther Halverson lives now in Bellingham, Wash.; Stella hult lives in Sun City, Ariz.; and Lillian Stromme lives in Williston. The baby of the family, Thelma, has also passed away now. The family home was constructed on the farm in 1915, and was later moved to Crosby, where it sits across from the county shop. Soon after Orvin was born in 1926, the farm suffered throgh years of drought. 'Nothing grew. If anything, it seemed to be Russian thistle. We used to put up Russion thistle for hay and I think most farmers did. We did sprinkle some molasses on the thistle before we fed it. That did help some,' Orvin recalled. They sent their cattle to Bottineau where there was still grass available for grazing. 'Just about everybody was in the same boat,' he said.

"Better times come

"Things couldn't get much worse than a complete hail out in 1940, but by 1941, the tide had turned and there was a good crop. Despite losing their large, hip-roofed barn to a fire in 1942, things were mostly looking up. 'It was hard to get machinery during the war,' Orvin said, because of rationing. In 1947, Orvin bought his dad out of the farming operation, and Edwin and Hannah moved to Williston, building a new house there in 1954. About that time, Orvin went to Minneapolis to visit some friends, and that is where he met his future wife. 'I was never going to marry a farmer,' Jeanette recalled, having grown up on a dairy farm. But farming was different here, she found, and farmers were not so tied down. Jeanette still remembers when Orvin got their first combine with a cab on it. As far as she is concerned, that's the best farm invention ever. 'That was just a luxury,' Orvin agreed.

"A new generation

"Orvin and Jeanette had their own family on the farm --- Mark today lives in Newtown and is engaged in construction; Lincoln farms in cooperation with Orvin, and on his own; Joel is on the road with his own mujsic ministry; and Rhoda Baade is a police dispatcher in Valley City. Looking back over the years, Orvin is nonchalant about his family's commitment to 100 years on the farm. 'I guess it's just been our life and our way of living. You kind of take things as they come,' he said. Even though he started life just befor the Great Depression, Orvin doesn't feel that anything he's seen in his lifetime could be as tough as being a pioneer. 'The years I've farmed, I don't consider as nearly tough as those that started out.'"

Tusen takk for all informasjon, Margit.

Lurer på om du vet noe om Anna, datter til Kitil og Guri Finnesgarden ?
Når hun er født, gift og om hun har barn.
Etter hva du har gitt informasjon om her, tror jeg hun er gift med en Hulbakk.

Mvh. Karen Elise
