Re: Margit Torgersen Væhler + Adolf Johansen Væhler
Doris M. McGuire
SEATTLE - Doris M. McGuire, long time Yakima Valley resident, passed away in Seattle on April 14, 2007, just a month shy of her 86th birthday. She was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta, in 1921 to Margit and Henry Metzgar. She grew up in Rossland, B.C., where she met and married the love of her life, Kenneth. With their first born daughter, they immigrated to the Yakima Valley in 1947 to farm 80 acres with her uncle, Ralph Metzgar and father, Henry. Doris and Ken turned the land on Lombard Loop from sage brush to a productive fruit ranch over their 30 years in the Parker Heights community. Doris worked in the fruit packing industry for Snokist Growers, where she retired as a bookkeeper.
Doris was a beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin and friend. She loved people and made friends wherever she went. Her home was the scene of countless family gatherings and drop-in visitors could count on having a drink in hand and a meal on the way before they'd even sat down. She never went anywhere empty-handed. She was an expert seamstress and at various times she knit sweaters, crocheted, and always made wonderful meals. She owned a legendary pig collection. She took up golf and fishing in her 70s. She had a plan every day and whatever the task, as Ken would say, she "went at it like she was stomping snakes." Her gregarious personality and sense of fun were known to family, friends and even total strangers, who soon became part of her circle. As a young woman, she learned to dance, and it was a favorite pastime throughout her life. She and Ken sought out dance floors wherever they lived or traveled, and no family celebration could be complete without incorporating a dance.
After retirement, Doris and Ken moved to Yakima, then returned to Canada, residing in Penticton, B.C., New Westminster, B.C., and for many years in White Rock, B.C. But Doris had strong roots in Yakima, and after Ken passed away she returned to Terrace Heights where she settled at Sun Country Estates. She spent winters in Hemet, CA and Yuma, AZ.
Doris was preceded in death by Kenneth, her husband of nearly 50 years, sister Cathlyn, second husband Edmund Kopp, and companion William Bolson.
She is survived by daughter Margit McGuire and son-in-law Steve Milam of Seattle, grandsons Shane, Drew and Chase, and by daughter Jean Peterson and son-in-law Doug of Woodinville, WA and grandsons Elliot and Henry.
Doris was matriarch of many beloved nieces and nephews on two sides of the family, as well as many cousins, grand nieces and nephews, and "shirt tale" relatives, all of whom will recall with laughter the special memories of this great lady.
Doris' last two years were diminished by Alzheimer's and the family wishes to acknowledge and thank the many doctors, nurses and caregivers who tended to her and her fellow patients. You are a blessing to those who struggle with this disease. Especially the family thanks the caregivers of Washington Center who eased her final journey with tender, respectful care.
At her request, no service will be held. Family and friends are invited to a gathering at the home of Margit McGuire and Steve Milam on Saturday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m. For details, please call Jean at 206-679-6040. A donation to a charity of your choice would be most appreciated, but to best remember Doris, order a Margarita or a tall Mac and soda, and have a turn around the floor. In heaven, she is dancing once more.

Re: Margit Torgersen Væhler + Adolf Johansen Væhler
I am seeking information on my grandfather's family in Norway - Adolf Johansen Væhler. In the United States, he became known as Adolph Vaaler and lived in Valley City, North Dakota from about 1910 until he died in 1980.
He married Nora Johnson in about 1913; they had three daughters: Margaret (now deceased), Aileen (my mother -- born in 1919) and Phyllis (born in 1929). I have a copy of the ship's manifest when my grandfather came to the United States in April of 1905 (through Ellis Island, New York). I also have his U.S. naturalization papers (1946). I also have photos and anecdotes to share with his Norwegian relatives.
I have recently discovered info on his parents, siblings and ancestors -- dates of birth, death, etc. I would love to hear from someone who has any information (and perhaps photos) from Grandpa Vaaler's Norwegian family. My mother, Aileen, exchanges Christmas cards with her cousin (living in Sweden now for a long time) -- I believe his name is Hans and he's the son of my grandfather's brother.
My name is Jerry Busche. I grew up in Valley City, North Dakota, and have lived in the Jacksonville, Florida, area since 1969. I would be interested in exchanging emails with any of my Norwegian relatives. Thanks.
