http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... 51516#ovre

- did some searching for Karl Steen. Well, I found the
1917 draft reg. record. This was surely the right
man..."Carl" (middle name hard to read looks like
"gust"??) Steen...gives the exact bday of Nov. 22,
1888.
and his address being in Eau Claire. I could not find
him at ancestry...but found an Oscar Steen living on
the same street, registered for the draft on the same
day as Carl.
This Oscar is in the 1920/1930 censuses in Trempealeau
Co...with wife and kids. Oscar was born in WI, found
him with his father Peter in the 1900 census living in
La Crosse county. Peter was born in Norway Dec. 1868
and immigrated 1882...(according to 1900 census)...

Re: Karl Gustav Steen, f. 22.11. 1888, fra Kristiania til US
Takk for svaret, Aud Marion.

I suppose you saw the answer from øivind (I don't know where the capitol key is on the "norwegian"
keyboard!!)? Not sure what he meant that I did not find the right Carl...I was looking at the same draft reg. record for Karl/Carl as him. Anyway I figured that Oscar and Carl were perhaps cousins...born only 1 year apart. Especially interesting that Carl's father had the middle name OsKar!! I also thought that øivind would surely know this other family. I am QUITE sure these 2 are related.
mvh Aud Marion

Re: Karl Gustav Steen, f. 22.11. 1888, fra Kristiania til US
Thank you so much for your answers, Patty and Margit.
Im am sorry my English is not good, but I will try to explain what I already know:
Karl Gustav Steen, born Nov. 22, 1888 in Kristiania (Oslo):
His father was Karl Oskar Steen, born July 4, 1859. His father never left Norway.
Karl Gustav crossed the border from Canada 1 Jul 1910.
In my first contribution I have shown his WWI Registration Card and his Boarder crossing from Canada to USA. The WWI Registration Card says he was married and had children and his address was 915 Lakeside .... , Eau Claire, Wisconsin. He was unmarried when he immigrated, so he probably married in USA. He had been on a visit to Norway later and went back to Wisconsin on March 11, 1921 .http://digitalarkivet.uib.no/cgi-win/we ... 51516#ovre
His brother was
Oskar Emanuel Steen, born Dec. 31, 1887 in Oslo. Han went from Norway to New York,
USA on Apr. 22, 1904. The travel was prepaid. According to World
War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 he was born Jan 4, 1887 and lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and was an unmarried baker.
I have not found any of these brothers in the actual censuses and I wanted help to find out what happened to them.
Patty, when you said the Oscar you found in 1920 and 1930 were born in ”WI, found
him with his father Peter in the 1900 census living in
La Crosse county”, I thought this could not be ”my” Oskar Emanuel Steen, since he was born in Kristiania (Oslo) and his father was Karl Oskar Steen.
I am thankful for any help to find these two brothers and what happened to them in USA.

Hei Øivind!
I find this, sometimes we need to be creative? His record will need to be checked.
Social Security Death Index
Name: Gust Carlson
SSN: 399-10-6537
Last Residence: Wisconsin
Born: 22 Nov 1888
Died: Aug 1963
State (Year) SSN issued: Wisconsin (Before 1951 )
Who is Patty? I have never seen any posts by a Patty?

I find this one also:
Social Security Death Index

Last Residence: Wisconsin
Born: 4 Dec 1887
Died: May 1965

Seems like your Oskar was not consistent with his birthdate you said, so it also should be checked or census checked for him?

Re: Karl Gustav Steen, f. 22.11. 1888, fra Kristiania til US
Thank you so much for your answer, Margit.
I assumed that the two brothers used Steen as a surname in USA since it was used by immigration and in WWI Draft Registration Cards and they always used Steen in in Norway, but I think you have found their deaths and I will order a Death Certificate if it is possible. I would never have thought that they could have used Carlson as a surname.
Do you think it will be possible to find them in the censuses? At the moment I don´t have access to them.
I do not know who Patty is, but if you see the answers from Aud Marion Røen, she tells she has got the information from her relative Patty in Wisconsin.

Hei
Patty is not a member here, but interested in genealogy and have been helping me and also others several times. You`ll find her name and entries at "Debatt, Digitalarkivet".
Since she has been visiting with us every year the last 3 years, she is close up to become "en trønder" !
Several from my US-relatives live in Eau Claire.

I found a Gust Carlson (and wife Ida) at 1920 census
in eau claire...he was SWEDISH, immigrated in the
1890s.
Eau Claire lib site says this Gust married Ida in Nov.
1912. So this info seems "off" from Karl Steen
info...
Da er det bare å lete videre.

Aud Marion, thank you for the new information and all efforts you and Patty have done to find Karl Gustav and Oskar Emanuel Steen for me.
I understand it is difficult to find them. It is strange it is so difficult to find them after they were registered in the World War I Draft Registration Cards in 1917.

Hei
Her kommer nytt fra Patty:
I called the eau claire lib...then talked to the
Veterans office in Eau Claire....the brothers must not
have returned to Eau Claire after 1917, otherwise this
Veterans office would have a record...was given a WI
veterans state info telephone#...left a message with a
lady who deals with old records....gave the info that
I had. See if something else comes up!

There is another option, they may have moved to Canada. Many people moved there when land opened up.
It makes for a good puzzle.

Thank you so much for your answers, Aud Marion, Patty and Margit.
I understand that Karl Gustav Steen and his brother Oskar Emanuel Steen did not come back to Eau Claire after WWI Registration and that there must be another man called Gust D Carlson.
I will try to find out if they went to Canada, Margit.
These two brothers are difficult to search and I appreciate all the help I have got so far.

Hei
I got a phone call from the Wisconsin Veterans office yesterday. I was told there is no record that Oscar or Carl Steen served in WWI. I was told they could have registered for the draft, but they never actually went to the war. So the Veterans Office had no more information about these 2 men.
I am sorry this was not any help to Øivind.

Thank you so much for the efforts to help me find these two brothers. Then one more possibility is checked out.
Oskar Emanuel Steen, born 31.12. 1887 in Christiania went to New York with Montebello on 22.4. 1904 and his brother Karl Gustav Steen, born 22.11.1888 came to USA 21.6. 1910 with SS Fortuna. It is strange that they cannot be found in any Census when they are registered in the World War I Draft Registration Cards, but so it is.
I wonder if their names are written in a way that make them hard to find.
But thank you so much for your help anyway.
