Sigurd Olsen

According to the death records in USA Sigurd Olsen was born on April 14, 1834 in Norway (do not know where). He is said to have emigrated in 1859 or 1869 (US census vary on the date).
He married in the US about 1870.
Any idea how I can find out where he was born and when he emigrated. The above information is all we know about him.

Thank you for your help.

The form of the name Sigurd might be a clue. In most of the country, it used to be written Sjur(d) or Siur(d), if not Syver(t) or Siver(t).

According to the Norsk personnamnleksikon, the form Sigur(d) was used in Telemark and Agder. A quick search in the 1801 census confirms this: Most hits on Sigur and Sigurd are in Telemark, and a few in Aust-Agder. No hits in other counties.

So my tip is that Sigurd probably came from Telemark or Aust-Agder.

It would be helpful if you could provide links to documents, eg. death record, census, marriage etc. Also, names of family members such as wife and children, if he had any. Finally, where he lived and his occupation.

I have found one good candidate (on Ancestry.com, named Siger Olson, birth 14 apr 1834 and death 14 Feb 1898 )
