John Christoffersen Byrud - Jon Kristoffensen born 1839*
Searcing for my great-great-grandfather John Christoffersen Byrud - Jon Kristoffensen - born around 1839, in Eidsvold (Minne), Norway.
He emigrated from Christiania/Kristiania 25th April 1868 (in the ships lists, it says 26th of April 1868) on the ship Anna Delius, and arrived in Quebec 17th June 1868. His name is wrongly written Dyrud.
He was not married, but had a child back home.
Now, at this time, most ships did go to Quebec from Norway, it was something to do with allowing more passangers on board, plus the fact that they could carry goods on the way back.
But I would think, most of them went on to America.
In the emigrationspapers, it does not state where his was intending to go, so I have no idea.
The only thing that might be a clue, is that I would guess he went to a place where others from his homeplace had gone before him - and there were actually 48 passengers on that sailing from Eidsvoll!! Maybe some of them went on together..
Can anybody out there help? I have been in contact with the Quebec Library, but they didn't find him.
Please write in Norwegian, if you know how.
Hoping for an answer.

Hi Turid,
You are correct. Of the approximately 800,000 Norwegians who immigrated to the United States, about 500,000 passed through the Old Port of Québec, in Québec City, Province of Québec, Canada. Of the Norwegians who travelled to the United States via Canada (landed at the Old Port of Québec), they would have crossed the Canadian-American border at St Albans in the Sate of Vermont. You might be able to find an American border-crossing record for him at that location.
Beklager, ser at du ville et svar på norsk.

Noen i De forente stater.

Hei

Hei.
He emigrated from Christiania/Kristiania 25th April 1868 (in the ships lists, it says 26th of April 1868) on the ship Anna Delius, and arrived in Quebec 17th June 1868 (a 3 weeks sailing).
Han seilte fra Kristiania 25. (eller 26.) April 1868.
Hans mor het Mari Olsdatter f.ca.1807 - d.1879
Jeg leter og leter

Hei Turid
Do you have John's exact birth date from church books?
Har du link for dette?
That is very important...veldig viktig...
Norwegians changed their names a lot when they came to America....først og etter navn.

Hi.
No, I don't have his exact birthdate - the ministrybooks were lost in a big fire in 1877.
So the dates I have written, is all I've got, unfortunately....

In Norway, his name would have been
Jon Kristoffersen Byrud,
but this would probably have become
John Christofferson, I imagine
