He was the son of Omond and Magda (Gunderson) Hillison. He graduated from Brodhead, Wisconsin, High School in 1939 and Milton (Wisconsin) College in 1943. Irving enlisted in United States Army Air Corp Reserve in 1942 and was called to active duty in February of 1943, where he graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant in April of 1944.

He married Hazel Ehlenfeldt at Grand Forks, North Dakota on June 19, 1943. He was a Pilot Instructor in AT6's at Merced, California until the end of the war. He remained in the Air Force Reserves for 20 years where he retired as a Major and was Chapter President of Beloit and Janesville ROA for 12 years. Irving opened the Janesville Sport Shop in a partnership with Harold Dooley in December of 1945. He remained active in the business for 57 years with his sons until February of 2002 when the store closed. He was a life member of the Reserve Officer's Assoc., Military Officer's Assoc. of America, Elks Lodge, Loyal Order of Moose, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Hazel Hillison; 4 sons: Michael (Fiancé' Sandra Freeman) Hillison, Dennis (Sheila) Hillison, John Hillison and Thomas Hillison; 8 grandchildren: Andrew, Matthew, Nathan, Kimberly, Laura, Emily, Christopher and Kyle Hillison; and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 3 sisters; 2 brothers; and daughter-in-law, Gina.
