thorvald Syversen f 1.6.1885
På forhånd takk for all hjelp.
Mvh Torgeir Karlin.

Re: thorvald Syversen f 1.6.1885

Mvh Torgeir karlin.

Re: thorvald Syversen f 1.6.1885
Torvold Syversen (Syverson in Canada) died in the City of Lethbridge in the Province of Alberta in Canada on 13. March 1980. His estate was taken over by provincial authorities who placed the following notice in the Lethbridge Herald Newspaper on 1. October 1980. To do so meant that there were issues in settling his estate after his death. Here is the text from the Public Notice:
PUBLIC NOTICES
NOTICE TO CREDITORS
AND CLAIMANTS
IN THE SURROGATE COURT OF ALBERTA JUDICIAL DISTRICT
OF LETHBRIDE In the Estate of TORVALD SYVERSON, late of the City of Lethbridge, in
the Province of Alberta, who died on the 13th day of March. A.D.. 1980. TAKE NOTICE that all persons having claims upon the Estate of the above named must file with the undersigned by the 31st day of October, A.D., 1980. a 'full statement of their claims
and of securities held by them.
Public Trustee

Calgary, Alberta
Canada
In order to Torvald to be able to vote in Canadian elections, he must have a one point been naturalised a British Subject. Documents on his naturalisation would be available from the Ministry of Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
I'll try to find an obiturary for him.

Re: thorvald Syversen f 1.6.1885
Here is his obiturary, published on March 14, 1980, in the said newspaper:
SYVERSON - Passed away in the city on Thursday, March 13th, 1980, Mr. Torvald Syverson at the age of 73 years of Parkland Nursing Home. The Graveside Service will be held at 1.00 p.m. on Saturday, March 15, 1980 in Mountain View Cemetery. MARTIN BROS. LTD., Directors of the Funeral Service. Telephone 325-2361.
If the provincial authorities got involved with his estate, then you would be able to have a search of the Province of Alberta probate records undertaken. If probate records are found, then you would be able to order them.

Re: thorvald Syversen f 1.6.1885
When it concerns Torvald's First World War service, it looks as if he came to Canada in March 1917 to enlist in the Canadian Army, specifically the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force. His military record is available from Library and Archives Canada at the following link:
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/data ... 3qguucj8i0
He was declared fit for service, but you would have to order his Canadian army record to see if he saw any actualy military service in Europe between March and August 1918.
For some reason, he travelled back to the United States and enlisted in the American Army in September 1918. However, I doubt that he would have seen any military service in Europe while in the American army seeing as the War ended on November 11, 1918.
Seeing as he served in the Canadian Army he would have been entitled to a military grave.

Re: thorvald Syversen f 1.6.1885
Unfortunately, this seems to be the wrong person, as the right Thorvald would have been 95 years old had he passed away in 1980. But in a way it is good to be able to eliminate a person from the search.
It is not easy to find the right person when the date of birth isn't given in the documents....

Re: thorvald Syversen f 1.6.1885

Re: thorvald Syversen f 1.6.1885
The Thorvald Syversen who came to Canada (the City of Winnipeg in the Province of Manitoba) in 1918 and enlisted in the Canadian Over-seas Expeditionary Force was born on June 1, 1885 in Norway and had been living in Ashland, Wisconsin, United States. I don't know why he came to Canada to enlist in the Canadian Army, but for some reason he travelled back to the United States and enlisted in the American Army in September 1918, in Charles County in the State of Maryland. The Thorvald Syversen who enlisted in the American Army also has June 1, 1885 as his date of birth, so I'm assuming that this is the same fellow.
From a Canadian perspective, the only thing that I can recommend is ordering Thorvald's military record while he was in the Canadian Army (March 1918 to August 1918). It might contain a few clues. I can't say if Thorvald ever came back to Canada, but the 1921 Census of Canada was just released about a month ago, but won't be indexed till December 2013. Once it's indexed, you could try to see if he appears in the 1921 Census of Canada. Otherwise, you could try to find him in the 1920, 1930 or 1940 censuses of the United States.
Canada always releases her censuses 92.5 years after they were taken, so the 1931 census won't be released till 2023 (this is of course valuable should you find him in the 1921 Census of Canada). My personal feeling is that he did not return to Canada after returning to the United States in September 1918. I noticed that upon his enrolement in the Canadian Army, then later in the American Army, that he changed the spelling of his first name to 'Thornwald'. Perhaps he changed the spelling of his surname?
Of course, the Thorvald Syverson in the City of Lethbridge in the Province of Alberta is a different Thorvald Syversen, so you can forgot him as a possibility.
