Hei !

"Krist Kolstad and Al Erickson, two young men from Iron River, Wis., Avere found dead in. a room in Courtney's hotel on Broadway, in Superior, Saturday evening. Death was caused by Inhalation of gas, the gas jet in the room having been left open when the young men retired Christmas night.

The room was engaged Christmas night by a man giving the name of C.N. Maoen, who appeared to have the young men in charge, as they were slightly intoxicated. Maoen took them to their room, paid for it and shortly afterward left the hotel. He has not been seen or heard of since, though the police department has been searching for him as a witness at the inquest.

When the young men were first found a rumor was started that they had been murdered, but the fact that the door was locked from the inside, the key taken from the lock, and Kol-
stad and Erickson were undressed, is believed to disprove to a large extent any murder theory. The police are inclined to think that the young men, being intoxicated, did not fully realize their condition and failed to turn off the gas, when Maoen left the room, and sundry bruises, scratches on their faces and bodies are believed to have been caused by contact with furniture when they struggled to reach the window to get fresh air.

The hotel clerk is said to have carefully instructed Maoen as to the proper manner of handling the gas when the men entered the room. Kolstad is a nephew of George and Karl Kolstad, who have been residents of Iron River for a number of years. Erickson is a
member of a large family of that name th.it is well knoAvn at the same town.
Kolstad was employed as driver on a slab wagon at the Alexander & Edgar sawmill and Erickson Avorked in the mill.

Both young men were seen early Christmas night in company Avlth two gills that formerly lived at Iron River, and the presumption by the police authorities is that later the same night they met Maoen, probably a stranger, who offered to put them to bed, as both Avere slightly intoxicated.

The bodies of Kolstad and Erickson are being held by Coroner Downs of Douglas county ponding an inquest, every effort being made in the meantime to find Maoen and the girls."
