The Viking Ship Museum displays the large Viking ships Oseberg, Gokstad and Tune, as well as founds from the chief grave at Borre in the Vestfold district. The three ships are the best preserved Viking ships known, found in royal burial mounds in the Oslo fjord. As burial ships, carrying the dead over to “the Other World”, the ships were equipped with unique treasures such as wagons, horses and especially textiles which are seldom preserved from the Viking age, now on exhibit at the museum.
Our knowledge of daily life in the Viking Age comes mainly from archaeological finds. The graves contained not only jewellery, weapons and vehicle tools, but also other tools and household goods. These finds are exhibited in the museum.
The museum is located at the Bygdøy peninsula approx. 10 minutes driving out of the centre Oslo.
The Kon-Tiki Museum contains the balsawood raft that was used by Thor Heyerdahl in his famous 1947 journey from Peru to Polynesia. The Kon-Tiki Expedition was conducted to prove that such a journey could be undertaken with pre-Inca technology and know-how. Heyerdahl wanted to prove his theory that the original Polynesian settlers had sailed in such rafts from Peru.
The museum is located near other museums on the Bygdoy Peninsula which can be reached by bus or ferry from Oslo.

The Akershus Castle contains dungeons, plush upper floors with banquet halls and staterooms, and the chapel used for royal events. The chapel holds the crypts of King Haakon VII and King Olav V. Its in walking distance from the city center.
