Hello All,

The account in CP concerning Euphemia, wife of Patrick, Earl of
Dunbar (d. 1248) states without documenation that

' He m., in or before 1213, Eupheme, da. of Walter FitzAlan,
otherwise Steward, Lord High Steward [S.]..... His widow,
who lived at Whittingham in East Lothian, d. probably
about 1267.' [1]

The account in Scots Peerage likewise includes among the issue of
Walter the Steward by his (probable) wife Beatrix of Angus, a daughter
' Euphemia, married Patrick, sixth Earl of Dunbar ' [2]. Concerning this
identification, I had previously posted to SGM a query as to the
identification and placement of Euphemia, due to a chronological problem
bearing on the age of her alleged brother Alexander the Stewart (stated
to have been born in 1214), and of her own son Patrick, Earl of Dunbar
(born before 13 Dec 1213) [3]. No contrary information or documentation
had been noted prior to today.

Further interesting information relating to Euphemia and her
descendants has been provided recently by MichaelAnne Guido. In
particular, a document in Bain's Calendar of Documents Pertaining to
Scotland concerned a manor of Euphemia's in which she enfeoffed her
granddaughter Euphemia (subsequently wife of William Comyn of Kilbride,
later of Sir Andrew Murray) [4]. This was helpful in the identification
of Euphemia's daughter Isabel de Dunbar, wife of Roger fitz John of
Warkworth, and of her granddaughter Euphemia, but Euphemia herself
remained identified as set forth above.

Andrew B. W. MacEwen, the noted Scots genealogist, advised that he
had found the parentage previously assigned to have been erroneous.
His findings have already been published (I believe in an article in
The Genealogist), in which he documented the identification of Euphemia
as a daughter of William de Brus, Lord of Annandale (d. bef 26 Jun 1215)
by his wife Cristina, the daughter of Walter fitz Alan [5].

All credit, and my thanks for the above information (I hesitate to
use the term 'discovery' in this post) is due to MichaelAnne Guido, and
to Mr. MacEwen. Revised ahnentafels reflecting this and other recent CP
corrections will be posted to SGM in short order.

Cheers,

John
