Parchment pedigree of Lionel Chute, immigrant to Ipswich, Ma
In 1859, in NEHGR, 13:123-24, D. Dudley of Boston communicated the
"substance of an ancient tabular pedigree, on parchment, now in the
possession of Mr. Ariel P. Chute of Lynnfield, Mass., who inherited it
from his ancestors." Ariel Chute was a descendant of Lionel-1 Chute,
early schoolmaster at Ipswich, Massachusetts, who came over from
Dedham, Essex. D. Dudley noted that "the original manuscript bears
evidence of being at least one hundred and fifty years old" [i.e., in
1859]. I have reproduced exactly his summary of the document,
retaining punctuation, and indicating his unorthodox generational
superscripts in brackets.
Alexander[1] Chewte of Taunton, in the county of Somerset, A.D. 1268,
had issue: John,[2] Esq. of the same town, m. Jane Bromfield, dau. of
Sir John B.; and Richard [2] of the time of Edward the First, 1274.
John[2] and Jane had a son Edward,[3] Esq. m. Christiana
Chiddock, dau. of Sir John C. and had issue, temp. Edward III., 1308:
Phillip,[4] Esq. of Taunton, m. the daughter of Sir John Brittan;
James,[4] m. the daughter of Richard Greenfield; Anthony,[4] m. Anna
Indford [or Indforte], and d. s. p.
Phillip,[4] Esq. had issue: George,[5] m. the dau. of Thomas
Faril, Esq., about 1344; and Jane,[5] m. John Cameron, Knight.
George[5] had Ambrose,[6] Esq. of Taunton, m. Amabel Chittester,
dau. of Sir John C., and had Edward[7] and Christian.[7] The former
m., about 1379, Dionis, dau. of Henry Sturton [Stourton]; the latter,
Christian,[7] m. Ralph Mansell, Esq.
Edward[7] and Dionis had Henry,[8], 1420, m. the dau. of Edward
Hasherfield, Esq.; William,[8] m. ___, and d. s. p.; Anthony,[8] m.
the dau. of Sir John Clifton, and had Christopher[9] of Hertfordshire,
who m. the dau. of Richard Wellgrave, Esq., and Robert,[9] Sargeant at
law, and later, Baron of the Exchequer, lived to the reign of Henry
VI.
Henry[8] had issue: Robert,[9] Esq. of Taunton, m. Alice, dau.
of Mark Bartley, Esq.; Anne,[9] m. John Stanley.
Robert[9] (1438) had Charles,[10] m. the dau. of Sir John Chang,
and, about 1480, had a son, Edmond,[11] who sold the manor of Taunton
to Lord Donhare, about 1502. His son and heir, Robert,[12] m. Jane
Lucas, dau. of John L., and had issue: Oliver,[13] m. the dau. of
Relide; Charles,[13] m. the daughter of John Crips of the Isle of
Guernsey; William,[13] m. the dau. of John Braddelson of Turbridge.
Charles[13] (1580 [? sic]) had issue: Anthony,[14] m. the dau.
of William Gee; and Phillip,[14] m. the dau. of Coolpepper, and had
George,[15] m. a lady of Kent, Edward[15] and Anthony[15].
Anthony,[14] above named, son of Charles, had issue:
Anthony,[15] William,[15] Christopher,[15] and Lionel,[15] m. the
dau. of Stephen Greene, and had five children-- Lionel,[16] m. the
dau. of Robert Baker; George[16]; one, m. ___; Charles[16];
Judith,[16] m. John Edmonson.
The arms of the intermarried families are depicted along the sides of
the pedigree.
The American immigrant was Lionel Chute, Jr., son of Lionel who
married the daughter of Stephen Greene. His wife was Rose Baker (or
Barker).
_Archaeologia Cantiana_, 18:55-71, is an article by Rev. A.J. Pearman,
"The Chutes of Bethersden, Appledore, and Hinxhill." A fold-out
pedigree chart between pages 54 and 55 begins with a Charles Chute who
married "… Crispe of Thanet," and had sons Anthony and Philip. One of
Philip's wives was indeed Margaret Colepeper of Bedgbury, which agrees
with the account given in NEHGR 13; Philip is also shown with sons
George, Edward, and Anthony, among others. The only son shown for
Anthony, son of Charles by the daughter of Crisp or Crips, however, is
a certain Arthur Chute.
Rev. Pearman notes (p. 56) that "the late Mr. Chute of the Vyne, near
Basingstoke [a descendant of the Kentish Chutes], informed me that he
had in his possession a pedigree beginning in 1268, from which it
appeared that they were then Lords of the manor of Taunton in
Somersetshire, and so remained until about 1500, when Edmond Chute
sold his patrimony. Charles Chute, Choute, or Chowt, grandson of
Edmond, married a daughter of John Crispe of the Isle of Thanet, and
was father of Philip Chute or Choute above mentioned ..."
A couple things correspond between the pedigree scroll owned by the
New England family and that in the hands of the Chute family of the
Vyne:
1. In both, the earliest date mentioned is 1268.
2. In both, the Somersetshire property was sold about 1500 by an
Edmond Chute.
3. In both, a Charles Chute marries the daughter of Crisp from some
island (Guernsey or Thanet).
It would be interesting if the two parchment rolls were still extant
and could be compared.
An Arthur Chute, gent., was witness to the will of Lionel Chute,
father of the American immigrant. See NEHGR, 50:114:
[Will of] LIONELL CHEWTE of Brampton clerk 24 July 1592, proved 1
August 1592. To be buried in the chancel there. He did gyve to
Lionell Chewte his son his graye nagge wch he did ride on to Ippiswch.
Item he did gyve to Grace, Sara and Judith Chewte his dawters to
everye of them a cowe. Item he did gyve and bequethe to Susan his
wief all the residue of his goodes and cattalls whatsoever desiringe
her to have care of the bringinge upp of his children and willed that
she shoulde have the execucon of his goodes and named her his
executrix. Theise beinge witnesses Arthure Chewte gent. Thomas Jolly
and others. Cons. Court Norwich,
Apleyard, 128.
In addition, a couple of men called "gentleman" named Lionel Chute of
Dedham as "cousin" in their wills:
NEHGR, 50:114: [Will of] WILLIAM BEADLE of Beccles, gent. 5 January
1620, proved 10 February 1629. [mentions "sister Sherman," "cousin
(female) Daies," "cousin Lionell Chowte of Dedham," "cousin Cuddon's

"cousin Pring's wife," "cousin William Wade," "cousin John Cuddon,"
"cousin William Greene," "cousin Francis Greene," "cousin Richard
Carter's son," "cousin Glemham Wade of Ditchingham to be executor"]
NEHGR, 54:216: [Will of] ALEXANDER SHARMAN, Thrundeston, county
Suffolk, gentleman. Will 2 Nov. 1634; proved 8 May 1635 … [mentions
grandchildren Sharman Deye, Thomas Deye, and Abigail Deye, "cossen
Lyonell Chewete of Dedham County Essex," Thomas Deye of Hoxon, gent.,

Re: Parchment pedigree of Lionel Chute, immigrant to Ipswich
"CHUTE (CHOWTE), Philip (by 1506-67), of Horne Place, Appledore, Kent.
b. by 1506, s. of Charles Chute of (? Malling), Kent by a da. of John
Crispe* of Birchington, Isle of Thanet, m. (1) by 1537, Joan, da. of
Thomas Ensing of Winchelsea, Suss., wid. of Peter Master (d. 1526/32),
2s. 1 da.; (2) Elizabeth, da. of one Girling of Wrentham, Suff., 1 s.;
(3) by Sept. 1546, Margaret (d. 28 Sept. 1555), da. of Sir Alexander
Culpeper of Bedgebury, Kent, 5s. 1da."
The information above is found in the sketch of Philip Chute, a Member
of Parliament, in _History of Parliament: House of Commons,
1509-1558_. The * indicates that his father-in-law, John Crispe of
Birchington, was also a Member of Parliament. Unfortunately, John
Crispe's service occurred before 1509, so he's not included in this
volume. However, a good clue to his identity is found in the sketch
of M.P. Henry Crispe (d. 1575), who was "son of John Crispe* of
Birchington by Avice, da. and h. of Thomas Denne of Kingston, Kent."
I would guess that John and Avice (Denne) Crispe were the maternal
grandparents of Philip Chute and his brother Anthony.
Interestingly, _RD600_, p. 469, gives a line of royal descent for this
John Crispe:
1. David I, King of Scotland, d. 1153 = Matilda of Northumberland,
widow of Simon de St. Liz, SETH
2. Henry of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon = Ada de Warenne, a
great-granddaughter of Henry I, King of France, d. 1060, and Anne of
Kiev, see AR7, lines 89, 50, 53
3. David of Scotland, Earl of Huntingdon (brother of Malcolm IV and
William the Lion, Kings of Scotland) = Maude de Meschines, daughter of
Hugh Kevelioc, 3rd Earl of Chester, SETH, and Bertrade de Montfort
4. Ada of Scotland = Sir Henry Hastings
5. Hilaria Hastings = Sir William Harcourt
6. Sir Richard Harcourt = Margaret Beke
7. Sir John Harcourt = Ellen la Zouche
8. Matilda Harcourt = Henry Crispe
9. John Crispe = Anne Phillips (or Fettiplace)
10. Henry Crispe = Joan Dyer
11. John Crispe = Joan Sevenoaks
12. John Crispe = Agnes Queke
13. John Crispe = Avice Denne
14. Margaret Crispe = (1) John Crayford; (2) John Blechynden
15. (by 1) Edward Crayford = Mary Atsea
and so forth ...
[Edward Crayford and his wife Mary were encountered in the lawsuit,
mentioned above, involving Arthur and Philip Chute.]
b. by 1506, s. of Charles Chute of (? Malling), Kent by a da. of John

Page 163 of the 1633-35 London Visitation shows that Lionel Chute's
ancestor Anthony Chute married the "da. of Mr Girling of Suffolke,"
whereas the parchment chart owned by the New England family showed his
wife as "the dau. of William Gee."
http://www.uk-genealogy.org.uk/england/ ... index.html
It's sort of interesting to me to see that the _History of Parliament_
bio. of Anthony's brother Philip shows *him* with a Girling wife, as
well:
"CHUTE (CHOWTE), Philip (by 1506-67), of Horne Place, Appledore, Kent.

So maybe the brothers had actually married sisters.
There is another London Visitation in the Harleian series. Does
anybody know if Nigel Batty-Smith eventually plans to put that one on
his website?

There are at least two other London Visitations published, of 1568 and

Chutes in the indices of either of these.
Can't answer that.

Re: Parchment pedigree of Lionel Chute, immigrant to Ipswich
Charles Chute was the grandson, not great-grandson (as you have it), of
".... Girling." And Charles Chute wasn't just any old body (being a
Member of Parliament; see _History of Parliament_ under "Chewte,
Charles"), so he probably did know what he was talking about.
As an aside, there may be the basis for an ODNB correction in the HOP
biography of Philip Chute of Appledore. Besides mentioning that a
certain property was sold for the benefit of the children of his
[Philip's] brother Anthony, it mentions his _own_ son Anthony, "the
future poet." The ODNB doesn't list any parents in its sketch of
Anthony Chute, the poet.

Re: Parchment pedigree of Lionel Chute, immigrant to Ipswich
I'll stick a copy of this stuff in right here, in case anyone wants to
work on it later. Leslie Mahler mentioned to me that he will have a
published note in the _Register_ on the marriage of the immigrant,
Lionel-1 Chute (and some other interesting English marriages of New
Englanders). Stay tuned!
_NEHGR_, 50:413:
[Will of] JOHN COWLFAX of Willingham Suffolk 20 May 1569, proved 6
October 1569. Wife Margaret late wife of Martin Frens of Dickleborowe.
Daughter in law Prudens Frens. Reignold and Alice Gybbon. My five
children. Brother Arthur Cheute gent. and Robert Payn to be executors.
Lyonell Chewte a witness. Cons. Court Norwich, Ponder, 232.
---------
_Lists and Indexes_, volume 21 ("List of Proceedings in the Court of
Requests"),
p. 166:
--John Colfaxe and Margaret his wife, executrix of Martin Freuse.
--John Freuse
--Lands in Dickleburgh (Norfolk).
