Aske of Aske
Dear Newsgroup,
I have noticed a few web sites at Rootsweb.com
especially Gary Lewis Family Tree (garynlewis1144@yahoo.com which indicate that
the father of Roger Aske who married Isabel Conyers by whom William Aske of
Aske who married Felicia Strangeways (see under Strangeways (p 695) in Douglas
Richardson`s Plantagenet Ancestry.) was a certain Conan Aske born abt 1403 who
married Alice, daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Pilkington) Saville of
Thornhill, his (Conan`s) Parents are given as Roger and Elizabeth (Pert) Aske, She
being indicated as sister to Isabel (Pert) Conyers and so also a Ros descendant.
This earlier Roger Aske `s parents are indicated as Conan Aske of Aughton and
Eleanor (Whitrington) Does Anyone know how valid any part of this pedigree
might be ?
Sincerely,
James W Cummings

Dear James, et al.,
I'd like to echo your request for a verification/validation of the
Aske families, esp. as to that of Aske of Aske. This is particularly
of interest as it concerns the descent of the manor of Bonby,
Lincolnshire.
What I have to date (including questionable connections, e.g.
the marriage resulting in the future inheritance of Bonby) follows.
The early generations are primarily from Clay's Early Yorkshire
Families.

Re: Re: Aske of Aske
I'd be interested to know if you've come up with any info connecting the Aske of Aske with the Maddisons of Fonaby, Lincs., the Maddisons of Alvingham Abbey, Lincs., the Ayscoughs (these are not Aske's though some confuse them) of South Kelsey, or the Hansards of South Kelsey.
The connections come later on the Aske line which you did not continue in your mail. I'm on a business trip and don't have my data in front of me, but I do recall an Aske family supposedly connected to the Ayscoughs and Hansards.
Cheers,
Kevan

RE: Re: Aske of Aske
John, Kevan, Others,
I, too, am interested in the Aske line, and perhaps I can fill in a bit of
Kevan's recollection.
I have Alice Hansard as the wife of Sir John Belayase and the daughter of
Richard Hansard and Joan Aske. The Belayase/Hansard connection comes from
the Stirnet website at:
http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/briti ... asyse1.htm and from
Kevan. The Hansard/Aske connection also comes from Kevan.
Richard Hansard was the son of Robert Hansard and Margaret Gascoigne.
Margaret, in turn, was the daughter of William Gascoigne and Elizabeth
Mowbray.
Like Kevan, I'd like to know how Joan Aske fits into the Aske lineage. The
timing suggests William Aske (fl. 1360-1425) as her father; does Clay
mention any daughters?
Thanks,
Gordon

RE: Aske of Aske
John,
I apologize for not seeing this sooner and adding it to my earlier response.
You mentioned that the Skerne-Aske marriage is ancestral to a number of
families including Fettiplace of North Denchworth, Berkshire. I believe the
Fettiplace family that is ancestral to Thomas Dudley of MA is descended from
the North Denchworth line. I'm wondering if you could fill in the
generations from William and Margaret (below) to the Fettiplace line?
Thanks,
Gordon

John, Kevan, Others,
I, too, am interested in the Aske line, and perhaps I can fill in a bit of
Kevan's recollection.
I have Alice Hansard as the wife of Sir John Belayase and the daughter of
Richard Hansard and Joan Aske. The Belayase/Hansard connection comes from
the Stirnet website at:
http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/briti ... asyse1.htm and from
Kevan. The Hansard/Aske connection also comes from Kevan.
Richard Hansard was the son of Robert Hansard and Margaret Gascoigne.
Margaret, in turn, was the daughter of William Gascoigne and Elizabeth
Mowbray.
Like Kevan, I'd like to know how Joan Aske fits into the Aske lineage. The
timing suggests William Aske (fl. 1360-1425) as her father; does Clay
mention any daughters?
Thanks,
Gordon

I'd be interested to know if you've come up with any info connecting the
Aske of Aske with the Maddisons of Fonaby, Lincs., the Maddisons of
Alvingham Abbey, Lincs., the Ayscoughs (these are not Aske's though some
confuse them) of South Kelsey, or the Hansards of South Kelsey.
The connections come later on the Aske line which you did not continue in
your mail. I'm on a business trip and don't have my data in front of me,
but I do recall an Aske family supposedly connected to the Ayscoughs and
Hansards.
Cheers,
Kevan

Dear James, et al.,
I'd like to echo your request for a verification/validation of the
Aske families, esp. as to that of Aske of Aske. This is particularly
of interest as it concerns the descent of the manor of Bonby,
Lincolnshire.
What I have to date (including questionable connections, e.g.
the marriage resulting in the future inheritance of Bonby) follows.
The early generations are primarily from Clay's Early Yorkshire
Families.
Roger de Aske [founder of Marrick priory,
of Aske, co. Yorks. ca. 1154-58; d. before 1169]

Conan de Aske [held a knight's fee of the honour

Kingston-upon-Thames I issue) of Bonby

from whom, Skerne of Hutton Cranswick;
Skerne of Bonby and Waltham, co. Lincs.;
Skerne of Driffield, co. Yorks.;
Skerne of Paswyke [Pattiswick] Hall, Essex;
Etherington of Driffield, co. Yorks.;
Farrar of Ewood, co. Yorks.;
Fettiplace of North Denchworth, co. Berks.;
Giffard of Whiteladies in Boscobel;
Hasilwood of Wickwarren;
Phelipps of Montacute, Somerset;
Mathew of Radir, co. Glamorgan;
Morley of Stondon, co. Herts.
Several list members descend from the Skerne-Aske marriage through
the Farrar family; the Giffard family of Whiteladies is of interest, as
it was on their property that the fugitive Prince Charles (later
Charles II) was hidden in the 'Royal Oak'. I know of descendants of
the Etherington marriage, and likely other descents fromt the other
marriages are extant.
Any assistance will be most appreciated.
Cheers,
John

Dear Gordon,
I understand the Dudley family descends from the branch,
Fettiplace of East Shelford (or Shefford), co. Berks. Possibly
this is a cadet line of the North Denchworth family: my notes
indicate the East Shelford line comes in during the 1400's.
Unfortunately as to the descent from the Skernes & c. being
discussed, the North Denchworth tenants descend from Anthony
Fettiplace of North Denchworth (d. 1546), who m. Bridget Skerne
sometime before 1533. This is too late a connection for the
Fettiplace-Purefoy ancestry of Thomas Dudley.
Cheers,
John

RE: Aske of Aske
John,
Thanks for the information. I was afraid the connection would be too late.
Given your observation regarding the Shelford branch, I looked more closely
at my line. To my disappointment I find the link I have to the North
Denchworth line documented only by the Ancestral File of LDS. I obviously
need to look more closely at this.
What I have is the Thomas Fettiplace who married Beatrice (de Pinto?) was
supposedly the son of Henry Fettiplace (?-1411) of North Denchworth, who, in
turn, was the son of Thomas Fettiplace and Mary Charney of same. If true,
then the Shelfords would appear to be a cadet branch of the North Denchworth
line as you mention below.
Thanks,
Gordon

Dear Newsgroup,
Thank You for your interest in this topic,
hopefully One or more of us will stumble across some verifiable information on the
subject of the Aske family`s branches. Not much on the smaller manorial families
I`m afraid.
Sincerely,
