Hello,
Does anyone have a reliable pedigree of the early generations of the
Campbells of Ardkinglas? Colin Campbell, 1st of Ardkinglas, was the
third son of Colin Campbell of Lochawe & his wife, Mariota Campbell
(SP I: 328-329). He was deceased by 6 May 1428 when Sir Duncan of
Lochawe granted land to his son & heir, John. I presume that he was
the ancestor of Colin 'Reoch' Campbell, called 5th of Ardkinglas, who
d.s.p.m. by 28 May 1566 [1] when he was succeeded by his nephew, Sir
James Campbell, called 6th of Ardkinglas, who was the son of his
brother Dougal by Janet, dau. of Patrick Graham, 1st of Inchbraikie
[2]. However, I haven't found any reliable sources dealing with the
intervening generations. If anyone has any suggestions I would be
most appreciative.
Sincerely,
Kelsey J. Williams

Re: Campbell of Ardkinglas
FWIW, there is a limited pedigree of Campbell of Ardkinglass in "The
Heraldry of the Campbells" by G. Harvey Johnston (1977). The pedigree has
very few dates and concentrates on the males of the family, mentioning only
some wives and no daughters. It gives sources for its heraldry but not for
its genealogy.
The line of Ardkinglass (ignoring siblings and cadet lines) is shown as
follows:
Colin, 1st of Ardkinglass (son of Sir Colin Campbell of Lochow), m. 1396
Christina, dau. of Robert Maclayman
John "Riach", 2nd of Ardkinglass, m. Marion, dau. of Iain Campbell of
Craignish
Sir Colin, 3rd of Ardkinglass, m. a dau. of the Laird of Houston
Sir John, 4th of Ardkinglass, m. a dau. of the Laird of Buchanan
Colin, 5th of Ardkinglass, m. 3 times (wives not mentioned) but d. spm
(succeeded by his nephew)
James, 6th of Ardkinglass (son of Colin's brother Dougal), m. Elizabeth,
dau. of the Laird of Lawers [?? Campbell of Lawers?]
All of these individuals and succeeding generations (in some cases with
daughters not shown by Johnston) are in the great database of Leo van de Pas
at http://www.genealogics.org.
As an addiitonal note, Dougal Campbell, father of James 6th above, had a
younger son Alexander who was Bishop of Brechin. Alexander had a daughter
Jean who was the 2nd wife of Sir John Hamilton of Lettrick, a natural but
legitimated son of the 1st Marquess of Hamilton. The Lords Bargany
descended from this couple, and they also had a daughter Jean (noted in the
Addenda to SP) who m. Sir Thomas Hay of Park and is among the ancestors of
Princess Diana.
Leo's database also shows the connection of the Campbells of Ardkinglass to
the wife of Karl Marx - which has been discussed at length here before and
can be found in the archives.

Re: Campbell of Ardkinglas
I too would be interested in finding out if anyone has sorted out the
genealogy of the Campbells of Ardkinglas. About the only thing I've
seen on this family is the not-exactly-dependable treatment found
here:
http://www.stirnet.com/HTML/genie/briti ... bell07.htm
However, as it says at the stirnet website, the information at that
hyperlink is tentative.
Incidentally, Scots Peerage vol. I's article on the Dukes of Albany
indicates that there is apparently a descent from Alexander Stewart,
3rd. Duke of Albany, son of King James II, down to Janet Graham, dau.
of Patrick Graham, 1st of Inchbraikie.

Hello,
Thanks very much! I really don't know why I didn't think to check
Leo's site before posting!
Incidentally, I am a descendant of the Bishop of Brechin through his
daughter Marjory (living 2 Jun 1653) who married Sir Alexander Menzies
of Weem and had eleven extremely prolific children.
Sincerely,
Kelsey J. Williams
