Hello All,

The account in CP states concerning John de Dinham (d. 25 Dec 1428),
in part,

' Sir John de Dinham, of Hartland, Buckland Denham, and
Cardinham, s. and h., b. 1359 or 1359/60 in co. Devon. When he
had proved his age, the King took his homage and fealty, and he
had livery of the lands, &c., which he had inherited as heir of
his mother, 19 Feb. 1380/1 (a). '

Note (a): ' The manors of Kingskerswell, Woodhuish, and Dunterton,
Devon, Cricket Malherbe and Northome, Somerset, OVer
Worton and half of North Stoke, Oxon, Over Wallop,
Hants, more than 3 1/2 knights' fees, and 4 advowsons.
He had proved his age before the escheator in co.
Devon (Close Roll, 4 Ric. II, m. 14). His fealty
was actually taken by the Chancellor, the Archbishop
of Canterbury. (Ch. Privy Seals, I, file 469, no.
1603. ' [1]

The dated cited for John de Dinham's birth is based in part on the
IPM of his uncle Hugh de Courtenay, cited in the account of his father
Sir John de Dinham (murdered 7 Jan. 1382/3), which states that that one
of coheirs, John [de] Dynham, the son of Hugh's sister Muriel, was aged
'10 years and more' [2]. The firmest grounds provided for the statement
that he was 'b. 1359 or 1359/60', i.e. that John de Dinham was born 19
February 1380/1 or before, is that Simon de Sudbury, Archbishop of
Canterbury and Chancellor of England, took his homage and fealty on that
date, so that he was certainly aged 21 (or more) on that date [3].

Documentation is provided in CPR as to the earliest date at which
John de Dinham could have been born. The following record was dated at
Westminster, 2 July 1380:

' Presentation of Thomas de Eyton, parson of the church of Great
Shelford, in the diocese of Ely, to the church of Southpole, in
the diocese of Exeter, in the king's gift by reason of the
minority of John de Dynham, son and heir of Muriel, daughter
and one of the heirs of Thomas de Courteneye, tenant in chief,
on an exchange of benefices with William de Donnebrugge. ' [4]

John de Dinham still being a minor on that date, we now know he was
born no earlier than 3 July 1359, and no later than 19 February 1359/60.

Cheers,

John *
