If you are interested in the Colleoni, please go to:

Notice that the ancestor (capostipite) of the main
branch of the family has the redundant name of...
Testino Colleone (from testes? I think so). This isn't
unusual in Italian families: compare Mastino
(mastiff), Can Grande (Big Hound) della Scalla; the
notorious Branca (or Brancaleone, Lion's Claw) Doria.

Dear Peter: no, as far as I can tell I have no
Colleoni blood. I';m not a Doria by agnation; there
are two successive brisures in the male line in the
late 16th century. Family members decided to revive
the Doria name in the mid 18th century - somewhat like
the ``new'' Percys of Northumberland. I'm descended
from Clemenza Doria, a criada da Rainha (noble lady
brought up by the Queen) who married in Brazil a
relative of the Governor-General Dom Duarte da Costa.
(That was in 1557.)

This branch of the family has had Antonio as its
typical first-name since the 16th century. My other
Italian line stems the Acciaioli; they are well
described in the Sardimpex site. My paternal gmother
was an Acciaioli de Vasconcellos, a double surname
that goes back to the 16th century too. The typical
first-name in this branch is Francesco/Francisco,
which became my first name.

Best, fa
