Hi All:

The following is a proposal for an addition to the Complete
Peerage. If any one has any further information they
would like to add, please contact me.

Volume 2, page 308:

SIR THOMAS DE BREWOSE or BREOUSE, of Manningford Bruce, Wilts,
Tetbury, co. Gloucester, Werthorpe, co. York, Chesworth, Sedgwick, and
Bidlington, Sussex, Bookham and Bramley, Surrey ... [d. 1361]

He was among those who, on 20 July 1322, were to be delivered to the sheriff
of Yorkshire to be kept in prison for adhering to the [Earl of Lancaster's]
rebels.
On 30 October, he was ordered to be delivered to Ralph de Cobham, who had
stood bail for him [1] .

Henry Tyeys, one of the leading rebels, had been Thomas's guardian in 1316
[2].
Ralph de Cobham was the husband of Thomas's sister Mary [3].

Presumably, Sir Thomas had been pardoned sometime after 1322 as he had
returned
to the King's favour by 1347 when he served as a banneret in the King's
retinue in the
Crecy Battle in France[4]. He latter served 1348-1356 as the Warden of the
Forest
south of the Trent, and as a Justice of Eyre for the forest pleas [5].

I wonder if this is entirely appropriate for CP. It is noticeable in
the later volumes that they tended tor restrict the details of the
biography, possibly to save money on both research and on printing.

So I have wondered what the objectives were of CP and suggest that
these might be in the core:

1. To list all the people who might have been called to the House of
Lords.

2. To include in this the early baronial families many of whom were
not summoned to the house but who had an analagous place in governing
England.

3. For each of these to include their father, mother, and mother's
parents but not to include siblings.

4. To provide dates and places for each peer and their wives for birth,
marriage, summons to council or parliament and death and burial.

5. To provide a brief sketch of the most significant feature's of the
peer's life.

6. To include account of any matters of law or genealogy affecting
succession.

7. To include notes on the evidence for the above.

Having said all that, I am not sure that all the above proposed
addition to CP is entirely necessary.

Maybe not necessary Tim, but very useful. Chris Phillips is organising some
useful additions to CP and I think this is one that will add interest.
