Portuguese & Latin

Just to give a taste of how close the mother language
is to Portuguese, I'll give some quotes from Catullus:

Passer meae puellae mortuus est

O pássaro da minha garota está morto.

Vivamus mea Lesbia, atque amemus!

Vivamos, minha Lesbia e [nos] amemos!

Da mihi basia mille, deinde mille,

Dá-me beijos mil, [e] então mil,

etc

BTW, the verb to love is nearly the same in the
present indicative:

amo, amas, amat, amamus, amatis, amant

amo, amas, ama, amamos, amais, amam

This is the result of deliberate effort. Scholars &
writers in the 17th-18th century deliberately
`polished' the literary language in order to make it
closer to Latin.
