The Mortimer exchange
Good teachers promote critical thinking. When they see a spark of
embryonic intellectual fire, however misguided that spark, good teacher's
provide oxygen. They do not smother that light with hubris and insults.

Yes, you are quite right. The source of the unpleasantness was the arrogance
and dismissiveness of Mr Parsons, followed by Mr van de Pas' sycophantic
support for Mr Parsons just because of who he is. Quite a revolting
spectacle really.

You ask a question, you get a reply and because you don't like the reply you
insult people....goodness you are a mature human being. If you had given
some details in the first place, or responded with details we might have had
a totally different conversation. You took two steps back to hurl abuse and
to go forward again seems beyond you.

Re: The Mortimer exchange
I can easily go forward again. There are other points made in IM's book that
haven't been mentioned on the list. Eg Berkeley charged with murdering Ed
II, but Maltravers wasn't. Why not if Ed III really thought they were both
guilty of regicide? There are a lot of minor points backing his point. The
Fieschi letter contains info that chronicleers at the time generally didn't
know, eg of Ed II's taking a boat from Chepstow before being captured. IM
argues there is internal evidence that info in the Fieschi letter could only
have come from Ed II. Also the acquittal of Berkely just after the receipt
of the Fieschi letter etc etc.

Eh? I don't recal that Ian Mortimer was really this stupid. How can
anyone know that information in the Fieschi letter "could only have come
from" Edward II? Is there a secret account written by Edward himself and
unseen by any contemporary of his to corroborate this wild claim?
The fact that one suspect was charged while another wasn't is hardly
evidence that the crime in question had never taken place. The reason
for Berkeley's acquittal was the failure to prove his guilt, not the
discovery that Edward hadn't been murdered in the first place.
According to Murimuth, while Maltravers was still hiding in Germany,
Gournay had been beheaded for the crime. If you want to propose that
later on Edward III became convinced his father had not been murdered,
what is the evidence that he extended a posthumous pardon to this victim
of such a gross injustice?
Doesn't it occur to you that Edward III's own mother was implicated, and
that his own anointing as king could be compromised by the events
leading to it, so that embarrassment over these factors might have
tempered his judicial vengeance against Berkeley and Maltravers with the
whole world watching?
