Complete Peerage CD

I see that Cokayne's Complete Peerage is available on CD at:

http://www.abc-publications.co.uk/shop/ ... p?p=33931f

Has anyone got a copy of this? Any views?

Not True.

Actually it's quite reasonable -- IF the quality of the images is good
and they are MAGNIFIABLE and PRINTABLE.

Further, it really needs a good Search Engine -- I doubt it has that.

But you also need Volume XIV as well -- and that is not included.

All in all, I'm happier with the print edition -- but then that was
about $600 U.S., including Volume XIV.

I'd also much rather have CP on CD in Microsoft Word format, rather than
that crippled Adobe Acrobat format.

Don't Forget S&H Costs.

Possibly, but it is 14 volumes (some over 1000 pages) so that works out at
less than GBP 9 per volume. This is a lower price than one would pay for a
single book on CD and some genealogy CDs cost GBP 40-50 for, say, county
census data and you might only get a bit of relevant into from. It looks
pretty good value to me (unless you know somewhere cheaper?)

Best wishes,

Graham

I would like to know if it is just scanned in or if it is searchable.
If searchable, it would be worth it, even if you already had the books.
I suspect they are just images of scanned pages.

Dear Graham, Gordon, Terry, et al.,

A (complete) searchable CP would be a great asset.

Ancestry.com does feature CP in a searchable version - but, orabile
dictu, this covers the first 4 volumes only. If you have no ancestry involving
anyone with a surname beyond the letter D, you are in luck.......

Cheers,

John

Of course, even with Adobe Acrobat, you can search for specific text.

Not as useful as a full-fledged electronic index, but not as bad as it
might be.

Not if the page is scanned in as an image....

Presumably because those were the only volumes they thought were out
of copyright.

They are also the ones most in need of revision, I believe.

My only book on CD was reproduced from the pages of the published volume.
The publishers of the original book did not request a copy on disk and I
never did supply them with one -- it was in WordStar 5, and they were
completely unable to read the index, which I did send on disk. The CD
version is searchable for specific text via Adobe Reader.

Come to think of it, the contracts for the two later books I published there
also did not require submission of a disk copy, and I don't believe I ever
sent those either. They were in the slightly less orphaned Word Perfect 5.1
(DOS) format.

There are two processes for making Adobe PDF files from scanned documents. One will
produce an image that does not have the capability of searching. The second one will.
The first involves simply importing each page image of the scanned document and producing
a PDF file of those images. To produce the second type, the scanned page images are
passed through an Optical Character Recognition software package, proof read and corrected
prior to producing the PDF file.

I have purchased CDRoms that have documents produced by each method. The second is more
useful of course but also usually more expensive.

Of course if the original publisher wants to produce a PDF file, it can be produced from
the typesetting document or Adobe Acrobat can be used to create the original camera ready
copy or electronic publishing document.
