Dear readers,

I'm looking for literature that deals with the medieval family Bissegil
from Hessia. Any hints would be great.

I find the name Bissegil curious and I am wondering where you found it? What time period are you speaking of and where is Hessia? You seem to imply that Bissegil became a surname - would this be a fair assumption?

Thanks,
Phil

I have ancestors of that name in the German country of Franconia going
back to the 16th century. They suddenly appeared and I don't know where
they came from.

There is a family of the name in Hessia, another part of Germany, which
goes back to the 13th century. As the name in any of its many variations
like Busigel, Pusickel, Beysiegel, Bizegil, Bisegil... is very rare i
think there is a connection.

My knowledge of the old Hessian family comes from reading an ancestry
list of Germany's most famous poet Goethe. I am wondering if there is
any genealocic work done yet which is giving more details than the
simple ancestors of Goethe.

Hi, Alex -

I thought I had some information that might be of use to you, but I
think you have seen the same Bissegil ancestry I have in my records -
in Dr. Carl Knetsch's 1932 study of the ancestry of Goethe. It is an
unusual name and I would imagine some German genealogist has done some
work on this lineage. Have you looked in the Deutsches Familienarchiv
books? You might also contact the Hessische familiengeschichtliche
Vereinigung in Darmstadt - they have a good web site and are always
helpful. This family married into the von Sassens and there are many
interesting descendants. (I descend from several of Goethe's
ancestors but not through this particular line.)
