In the parish of S. Agnese, we find in the 15th cenutry the Franco
family, divided in many branches.
One branch of the Francos was a member of the "Arte dei varoteri" (or
"pellicciai").
Another branch, which lived at "Calle dei Franchi", obtained its
"cittadinanza originaria" with a certain Lodovico, son of Martino
Franco and Maria Bonaldi, in 1574.
In 1661 Antonio and Bernardo Franco sons of Anzolo, Anastasio and
Piero Franco, and Lucieta Franco daughter of Piero d'Arquà notified
their properties at S. Agnese in "Calle dei Franchi".
The famous poet Veronica Franco was probably a member of this family,
since according to her portrait, painted by the Fr. Degli Agostini,
she is with a coat of arms "diviso da una fascia con 4 stelle per
entro, e nel fondo tre monticelli". The same arms of the Francos who
were citizens at "Calle dei Franchi" at S. Agnese.
So it is considered a mistake the proposition of Apostolo Zeno, who in
his book of the "Terze Rime" by Veronica Franco, now at the Marciana
Library, affirmed that all the Franco of S. Agnese were of the lowest
rank and fishermen.
