In 1549 a certain Giovita Fontana q.m. Bartolammeo, from Piacenza, of
noble condition, moved to Venice. Here he became a merchant and had a
son, Giovanni. This Giovanni F. founded a Palace Fontana in the parish
of San Felice next to the Canal Grande, by an architect of the School
of Sansovino.
Pietro F., son of Giovanni, in 1646 was elected by Henry of Lorraine,
duke of Guisa, governor of Caserta in the Kingdom of Naples. The four
daughters of Pietro married Venetian patricians.
Luigi, one of Pietro's sons, in 1700 joined the Order of the Venetian
Secretaries.
The Fontana family in 1771 was added to the Noble Council of Padua,
and confirmed by the Austrian government in 1819.
In the Fontana Palace at S. Felice was born in 1693 Pope Clement XIII.
The Fontanas also had a palace at S. Antonino, inherited from the
Padavin family.
The famous Venetian historian Gian Jacopo F. was of the branch of S.
Antonino.

There was another Fontana family, of citizen origin, that lived in the
parish of S. Marina. A certain Paolo Fontana lived in 1566 at S.
Marina. The Fontanas of S. Marina rented they houses from the Dolfin
patrician family.
