Hi Everyone,

Thomas de Chaworth of Alferton,co, Nottingham and Medburne, co. Leicester,
died 1347 was married to Alice, whose second husband was John Holt. Their son
and heir Thomas Chaworth married Joan who was the widow of Sir Richard de la
Pole and the mother of his heir Sir William de la Pole. It now appears that
the second Thomas Chaworth had two children by Matilda de Copsi, daughter of
Robert de Copsi of Medburne, co. Leicester. I n addition to two daughters,
Alice and Elena, which she had by Thomas Chaworth, she also had two sons
Thomas and John who were granted land by Thomas Chaworth. There is a grant of
1340 which indicates that there are no heirs born of Lady Joan and Thomas
Chaworth at that point:

Scope and Content
Medbourne
GRANT (indented).
(a) William de Blaston, capellanus;
(b) Lord Thomas de Chaworth, Knight, son of Lord Thomas de Chaworth and Lady
Joan his wife.
William grants to Lord Thomas and Lady Joan all his land and tenements with 3
shillings, 5 pence and 2 pounds of cummin and ½ lb. of pepper rent, in
Medburn, which he holds by grant from the said Lord Thomas son of Lord Thomas. To
hold to the said Lord Thomas and Lady Joan his wife and the heirs between
them legitimately begotten forever of the chief lord of the fee for the services
owed and accustomed. And if the said Lord Thomas and Lady Joan should die
without such heir then the lands and rents are to revert to the right heirs of
the said Lord Thomas son of Lord Thomas. (Warranty clause).
WITNESSES :- Peter de Notyngham, William de Tilton de Kaythorp [Keythorpe],
Hugh Lewys, de Medburn, Robert Ade de eadem, Hugh de Hemyngton de eadem,
clericus.
DATED at Medburn.
ENDORSEMENTS :-
(i) Carta W. Blaston Cap'li fact T.C. milit' filio T.C. militt' & Johanne
uxori eius de omnib' terris etc que Robert de dono ipsius Thome C. filii in
Tallis;
(ii) Pro Chaworth in Medburne.
Who is this Matilda de Copsi and is she the mother of Thomas Chaworth, the
heir of Thomas Chaworth?
