Further to my post about the Fleming family, please find below a
tentative reconstruction of the descendents of Adam fitz Swain's
brother Henry. Much of this information is gleaned from Nicholson and
Burn, as well as RR Sowerby's "Historical Castle Sowerby". I am
attempting to verify all the data and apply source references to the
people mentioned, I will keep the group posted.

1 Ailric married ?

1.1 Swain married ?daughter of Herveus de Vesci (Skaife, Yorkshire

Henry I with land mostly east of river Eden and other manors in the
southern half of Inglewood Forest – referred to by early historians as
the Barony of Sowerby (confirmed in An Account of the Most
Considerable Estates and Families in the County of Cumberland by John
Denton of Cardew, CWAAS Tracts Series, No 2, 1887). This states that
the Barony comprised Culgaith, Blencarn, Skirwith, Melmerby,
Ainstable, Langwathy, Edenhall, Ousby, Glassonby, Gamblesby,

Caldbeck, John fil. Thomas Hudson of Skelton, John fil Richard de
Carlisle, William Ullayke of Bolton, Richard de Thornthwaite and
others with killing his brother.

Materials for this period seem to be very scanty and I am attempting
to contact specialists in the history of the area. As for the manor
of Sowerby, the following can be added.

Before 1218 Sowerby reverted to the Crown. In 1218 King John granted
it to Robert de Ros in leiu of the loss of his Normandy lands. It was
held by him until 1237.

In 1242, in part settlement of the claims of the king of Scotland to
lands in Cumberland, the Sheriff of Cumberland was ordered to give
seisin of the manors of Langwathby, Salkeld, Scotby, Sowerby and
Carlatton together with land of £60 annual value to Alexander II of
Scotland.

In 1257 Alexander III of Scotland gave to Queen Margaret the manor of
Sowerby as her own.

In 1292 on the death of Alexander III, a jury found that the heir to
the manor of Sowerby was John de Baliol.

Best wishes
David
