The Erizzo family moved from Istria to Venice in 805. In 1050 they
were already members of the Consiglio.
Francesco E. was elected "doge" in 1631. In 1633 he ordered for
himself a rich mausoleum in the church of S. Martino, where he was
buried in full armour in 1646.
The Erizzo lived in La Maddalena. They had a palace in Canal Grande,
built in the 15th century. There were in Palazzo Erizzo a series of
paintings by cav. Celesti about the life of Paolo Erizzo. They also
had properties in S. Martino, in which palace doge Francesco was born.
Paolo E., "martire della patria", being podestà of the siege city of
Calcide, was captured by the Turks in 1469. By orders of Mahomet II he
was literary cut in two halves. Anna, daughter of Paolo, after the
death of his father, was taken to the presence of the Sultan, and
attacked him with her own hands.
In the Palace Erizzo at S. Martino took place the Accademia Erizzo,
which after being funded at Cà Farsetti was moved in 1787 by NN.HH.
Andrea and Guido Erizzo, partners of the Academy. This Academy,
especialised in Polical Economy and Law, lasted till the end of the
Venetian Republic.
