The following item from A2A offers support for the claim that Chief
Justice Oliver St. John had a cousin Samuel Browne--

BYGOTT COLLECTION; HILL OF HAWKSTONE

HILL OF HAWKSTONE ESTATE TITLE DEEDS

PREES PARISH

Prees, prebend and meeting

FILE - LEASE - ref. 731/2/2832 - date: 23 Mar 1634
[from Scope and Content] Peter Bulkeley, prebendary, to
Oliver St. John and Samuel Browne.

That's good to see.

Samuel's father is Nicholas Browne (-PCC Will pr 3 June 1608), Of Polebrooke
(and vicar thereof), Northamptonshire. He is the Nicholas Browne who I think
may be the father of the Frances Browne who m, in 1627, Richard Washington and
I also think that Nicholas's brother Lancelot Browne was the same as the
Lancelot Browne, surgeon to Elizabeth I and James I and whose daughter Elizabeth
married the eminent surgeon William Harvey, as per previous posts, but proof is
still needed.

Polebrooke is mentioned, with many other properties, in A2A _Devon Record
Office: Simcoe_ File Ref 1038 M/T/13/6, and File Ref 1038 M/T/13/7 being a Quit
claim dated 1 October, 15 Henry VII (1499) and Deed of gift in tail dated 20
December, 15 Henry VII. The gift is from Elizabeth Elmes widow of John Elmes of
Henley on Thames, Oxon., merchant of the 'Staple of Calais', and daughter and
heiress of William Browne of Stamford, Lincs., merchant of the same staple,
to William and John Elms whom I think are her younger male issue.

This Wm Browne (a generous benefactor to the town of Stamford) had left an
only daughter, the above Elizabeth Elms, but the _main_ Stanford Browne line
continued from Wm's brother John for many generations.

I don't know if Nicholas Browne's interest in Polebrooke was the same as the
above, or perhaps the estate had been partitioned at some time, but the above
suggests that Nicholas was in some way connected to the Stamford Browne
family. The above gift also included land in Great Casterton and Little Casterton,
Lincs which was where the manor of the _main_ Stamford Brownes became
situated.

Also in these properties is Swynsted (Swinstead) which was mentioned here a
few months ago, in a different thread, being, at an earlier date, (IIRC) part
of a Nevill estate.

Thanks for the interesting information on Brownes. I'm pretty sure
that I remember seeing a pedigree chart of the Harveys (including the
famous William Harvey) in Cussans' _Hertfordshire_. Maybe that would
help clarify some issues ...
