The Dandolo family of acient tribunes became lords of Gallipoli,
Andro, Riva, and other Greek places during the ages.
In 1130 a certain Enrico D., patriarch of Grado, was uncle of other
Enrico D., who became "doge" in 1192 and was famous for the conquest
of Constantinople. Of the sons of doge Enrico, Fantino was patriarch
of Costantinople, and Rainieri a valuable warrior and procurator of S.
Marco. The last died in Candia in 1213, while repressing a local
rebelion in the island.
Siblings of Rainiero were Giberto, who in 1260 took from the Genovese
four war galleys, killing the famous Genovese captain Grimaldi; and
Dandola who married the king of Rascia (Serbia).
Giovanni, son of Giberto, was elected doge of Venice in 1280, and was
the father of Andrea, who was taken prisoner of the Genovese in 1295.
There were another two "dogi" of the Dandolos: Francesco, in 1328, and
Andrea in 1342. Francesco was prudent and courageous, but he was
involved in a scandal with Isabella Fieschi, wife of Luchino Visconti
prince of Milan, arrived to Venice for the Feast of the Ascension.
Andrea was almost a scholar, responsible of a "Cronaca Veneziana", and
protector of writers, besides the friend of Petrarca.
Leonardo D., son of doge Andrea, was an ambassador and candidate for
the "ducato".
Fantino, son of Leonardo, was delegate "ad latere" of Pope Eugene IV,
and in 1448 bishop of Padua.
Gerardo D. was an illustrious captain in 1438 in the war against the
duke of Milan.
Pietro was bishop of Vicenza in 1501, and in 1507 of Padua.
Zilia D. was the wife of doge Lorenzo Priuli, crowned with great
"pompa" in 1557.
One of their most beautiful palaces was the one in San Luca's parish,
the house of Enrico Dandolo. This house suffered a terrible fire in
1523 (Sanudo). Here lived the famous Pietro Aretino.
