Bill Reitwiesner has recently added the note that "4076 & 4077 [i.e.,
Samuel Shattuck and his wife Damaris] have other descendants." The
only descendant shown, however, is one Albert Howard Fish (1870-1936).
Who was Albert Howard Fish, I wondered? A cannibalistic
mass-murderer, it turns out.

As charmed as I am by this--being descended six ways from Samuel and
Damaris-- they had other, more reputable, descendants, including
Lucretia Coffin Mott:
Samuel Shattuck m. Damaris ----
Sarah Shattuck m. Richard Gardner
Deborah Gardner m. John Macy
Thomas Macy m. Deborah Coffin
Deborah Macy m. Benjamin Coffin
Thomas Coffin m. Anna Folger
Lucretia Coffin
Gary Boyd Roberts' articles on "Nantucket Soup" would probably show
other descendants of Samuel and Damaris.
1794 and 1795, Edmund Reade and his wife Elizabeth Cooke, are also
ancestors of Tennessee Williams, as shown in John A. Brayton's book,
_The Ancestry of Tennessee Williams_.
Some of the "celebrity relatives" that WAR includes are very minor and
could probably be omitted with no loss: Robert Emmet Sherwood, Tasker
Howard Bliss, Benjamin F. Wade, Charles Jackson Paine, "Billy" Bush,
Charles Seymour, William Lyon Phelps, etc.

Re: Additions to John Kerry's ancestor table
Both Albert Fish and Lucretia Mott would be related to Mr. Kerry at
least two other ways. Richard Gardner, the husband of Sarah Shattuck,
was a connection of both of Kerry's Gardner lines (the Nantucket
Gardners being descended from the Salem Gardners).

Re: Additions to John Kerry's ancestor table
Dear John ~
Thank you for this good post.
I've worked on the Shattuck family in the past, as this family is
ancestral to my six children. As I recall, Widow Damaris Shattuck had
a number of children by her 1st marriage, one of whom Damaris Shattuck
married in 1653 at Boston, Massachusetts to Isaac Page. Isaac and
Damaris Page subsequently removed to a Quaker settlement in North
Carolina, where they left a large number of descendants.
I'm not sure there is any evidence which proves the name of Widow
Damaris Shattuck's first husband. Some secondary sources give his
name as Samuel, which was the given name of their son. However, I
haven't seen an actual record which proves her husband's name was
Samuel Shattuck. If you know of such a record, I would be glad to
hear about it. If no record is forthcoming, then I would advise Mr.
Rietwiesner to remove 4076 from his database.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah

Re: Additions to John Kerry's ancestor table
Hi Douglas,
You may be right that the name of Damaris' first (Shattuck) husband is
not given in New England records (did he even come to New England?).
Her son was definitely named Samuel. Her second husband was Mr.
Thomas Gardner of Salem, father of her son-in-law Richard Gardner of
Salem and Nantucket. So G.E. McCracken's article on the Salem
Gardners (_TAG_, 1940s or 50s) may say something more about the
identity of Damaris' first husband.
If you mention this to WAR, you might want to tell him that his #1951,
Lucy (Smith) Gardner, is incorrect, as well. This Lucy was the wife
of Thomas Gardner, Jr., OF ROXBURY--no connection of the Salem
Gardners.
