Early ASKE family history

Legg inn av Jeremy Clarke » 24 aug 2004 09:14:01

I am new to this group and want to discuss the early Aske family
history, the family were seated at Aughton in Yorkshire. Much seems to
be written about JOHN ASKE of Aughton who led the Pilgramage of Grace
1536, but I can find little (almost nothing) regarding the earlier
family history.

I am currently searching for details of the early ASKE family as part
of a project to trace the history of land that they held in northern
Sussex.

The scant information I have to date is:

1. JOHN ASKE of Aughton (b~1365 d~1397) m JOAN SHOVELSTRODE [Joan was
the heir to the Shovelstrode estate in Sussex]
they had:
ELIZABETH ASKE (b~1390 d~1403) m THOMAS FITZWILLIAM
2. JOHN ASKE m ELIZABETH GASCOIGNE

JOHN ASKE & ELIZABETH GASCOIGNE had:
3. RICHARD ASKE
+ others?

RICHARD ASKE m MARGARET OUGHTRED (m~1458)
they had about 12 children including JOHN ASKE of Aughton.

The land & property that I am reseaching which includes the manor of
Shovelstrode is referred to in a demise in 1444, as being 'had by
feoffment of Richard Aske's father John Aske, esq.'
I believe that this Richard Aske is the one marked 3 the son of John &
Elizabeth.

Are there any pedigrees or summary histories for the early Aske family
that are able to put any more firmness on the dates and lineage? All
of the dates and lineage above came from unreferenced entries and
therefore give me little confidence in their accuracy.

I believe that John & Elizabeth are buried at Hareton Church, just
north of Leeds but can find no mention of their death dates. I am
particularly interested in when John Aske (m to Elizabeth Gascoigne)
died as one of the most impressive buildings has been dated to 1428
(dendro-date) and I am trying to determine who built it and why (was
this just after inheritance).

If anyone is able to help or point me in a direction to continue my
research that would be very useful.

Thanks

I'm interested in the Oughtred, Ughtred, Outhwaite line particularly
in or near Hornby, Yorkshire. Someone gave me the following
information compiled before 1939.

Sir Robert Ughtred (1405-1472) married Joan Aske. Her parents were
John Aske and Elizabeth Gascoigne of Harewood. The parents of John
Ask were Joan Shelvestrode who married John Aske of Aughton. The
parents of Joan Shelvestrode were Sir John Shelvestrode who married
Margaret Camoya. The parents of Sir John Shelvestrode were Sir Roger
Shelvestrode and Eva Dawtry. The parents of Eva Dawtry were Sir
William Dawtry and Cecilla de Bohun. The line continues back quite a
bit further but mostly without dates and without any other Aske
people.
