The following item on A2A apparently concerns Tristram Coffin, later

FILE [no title] - ref. 74/554/1 - date: 7 November 1640
[from Scope and Content] 1 Tristram Coffin of Butlers, Devon,

Right, same family. But the Coffin ancestry in England is only known
for a couple of generations, so not exactly a "gateway" ancestor.

The Coffins have all been Quakers since ca. 1700 (at least the
Nantucket branch), so that may help account for Sloan Coffin's
pacifism.

Yes, good point.
Of course, Bill Coffin is nominally a Presbyterian -- which is ironic
and somewhat amusing.
I saw him in his prime.

Tristram Coffin is your Gateway Ancestor to the New World, as I
understand it -- he need not connect to Royalty -- if he did he would be
a GARD -- Gateway Ancestor of Royal Descent.
How do you relate to Bill Coffin?

Can't help wondering if there's a connection to Tristram (Tris) Coffin
the actor of the 1940s?

Sounds as if there might well be.
Do you have a biographical sketch of him?
What the hell is A2A?

GARD is your personal coinage, I think. I wouldn't say that an
immigrant to North America whose ancestry is uncertain is much of a
"gateway."
How do you relate to Bill Coffin?
I don't relate to him, really. He was past his prime by the time I
was born.

Twaddle.
Another juvenile playing at genealogy.
Tristram Coffin is allegedly the Coffin Gateway Ancestor -- the first to
the New World.
'Nuff Said.

A2A is a very useful website which provides access to the indexes of a
number of British archives, sometimes with detailed descriptions of
the documents indexed. Its address is http://www.a2a.org.uk/
Its usefulness is similar to the PROCAT facility on the Public Record
