According to some, the Da Ponte family originated in Greece. According
to others, they were from Germany.
In 959 a certain Giovanni Da Ponte, together with Giovanni Contarini,
was sent as an ambassador to the Pope John XII.
A certain Ambrogio was bishop of Concordia in 1386.
Antonio Da Ponte was bishop of Sebenico, and of Concordia in 1402,
from where he was later transfered to other sees.
Nicolò was elected duke (doge) of Venice in 1578.
Lorenzo died in 1741 as bishop of Ceneda; and was a famous writer.
In the parish of S. Agnese they used to have their Sunday house, which
Alvise Da Ponte notified in 1537 to the X Savii calling it "la casa a
S. Agnese ove abito".
The famous palace Da Ponte in S. Maurizio was ordered in 1578 by doge
Nicolò Da Ponte. According to Fontana the ground floor was built by a
certain Giovanni Da Ponte sometime before.
In the Palazzo Da Ponte at S. Maurizio lived in the 16th century the
famous Irene da Spilimbergo, with his uncle Gian Paolo Da Ponte.
